Sometimes stepping out of one’s comfort zone can amount to a huge phase shift in life, like taking a new job or starting a relationship. Other times the act can be as simple as forgoing a daily routine to do something new and different like socializing with coworkers after hours or finally taking the step to cook more at home.

Whatever the case may be, stepping outside of one’s comfort zone is usually a healthy and rewarding experience. But it is really scary at the same time. Here are a few tips for positive thinking when anxiety and fear hit you.

  1. Mix – Mix with positive people. Positivity is infectious. So if you want to catch it, spend more time with positive people. Negativity is infectious too, so try to avoid pessimists or wingers.
  2. Change – Accept Change. Come to terms with the fact that change is a positive thing. Don’t be frightened of it. If you don’t open your mind to the need to do things differently, you can’t learn, improve and develop.
  3. Remind – Keep a journal. Record what you do. Why? So that you continually remind yourself of the good things that are happening and your achievements. Negative people often forget the good and dwell on the bad. Each day, before you go to bed, try writing down 3 good things that happened to your during the day.
  4. Plan – Have a plan each day. Plan today what you’ll do tomorrow arrives. You’ll get hijacked by other things. Have personal goals over the next month, next week and then each day.
  5. Act – Exercise releases positive chemicals into the blood stream. Try to do something regularly that you enjoy, even if it’s just a walk round the block. it’s amazing how different you’ll feel after wards. Build this activity into your daily planning process. That way, you’re more likely to do it!
  6. Speak – Speak positively. Always communicate a positive message, even when things aren’t going well. Be disciplined. If you think negatively, you’re more likely to talk negatively. Smiling more helps tremendously with this.

    1. If you always do what is easy and choose the path of least resistance, you never step outside your comfort zone. Great things don’t come from comfort zones.” “Comfort zone: simply means the routine of one’s daily life – it is a psychological state in which one feels familiar, safe, at ease, and secure.

  1. I have a couple of times and I will have to again soon.
I’m going to be reaching out for volunteers who would allow me to practice my coaching skills on them for my course I’m doing. The thought of reaching out to strangers to practice something I’m still learning scares me so much. I know that it’s such a huge opportunity for growth so I need to just do it.

    1. Yes indeed. Self-talk is something you do naturally throughout your waking hours. People are becoming more aware that positive self-talk is a powerful tool for increasing your self-confidence and curbing negative emotions. People who can master positive self-talk are thought to be more confident, motivated, and productive.

  3. Great points. I get attached to my daily routines and then I have to shake it up a bit. And every time I do that, it refreshes my soul. Routine is okay but I need to be open to spontaneous activities. I love when someone comes to visit without any notice. I tend to get anxious beforehand when plans are made. I tell all of my family to please just drop by. I love that surprise.

  4. Been out of my comfort zone several times. A big step for me was recently published a humor book. Feels a little naked to publish a book.
