Plump, juicy, and sweet, with vibrant colors ranging from deep purple-blue to blue-black and highlighted by a silvery sheen called a bloom, blueberries are one of nature’s great treasures. Though miniature in size, they are also proof that, when it comes to health benefits, good things really do come in small packages.

With blueberry production increasing to match rising levels of consumption, it’s clear that more and more people are discovering just how good these little blue dynamos are. Here are a few benefits :

  • Low Fat : A one cup serving contains only 80 calories and almost no fat.
  • High Fibre : A handful of blueberries helps satisfy recommended daily fibre intake. Fibre helps keep the body regular, the heart healthy, and cholesterol in check.
  • High Vitamin C : One serving delivers almost 25% of one’s daily requirement of Vitamin C. Vitamin C aids collagen formation and helps maintain healthy gums and capillaries and a healthy immune system.
  • High Manganese : Manganese plays an important role in bone development and in converting proteins, carbohydrates, and fats into energy.

Blueberries are well known for their nutritional and beneficial health effects. Its content in anthocyanins contributes to the health‐beneficial effects of blueberry against several chronic diseases including cardiovascular disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Try to add them into your diet today.

    1. Yes Laila, we should all include more blueberries in our diet. Making one simple change to your diet by adding blueberries could have a significant impact on cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, and brain power. In addition to polyphenols, blueberries are an excellent source of vitamins K and C, manganese, and fiber.

    1. I am glad you agree. It has so many benefits. Recent study findings suggest that blueberries may influence genes which regulate fat-burning and storage, helping reduce abdominal fat and lower cholesterol. When combined with a low-fat diet, blueberries might also lower triglycerides and improve blood sugar levels, each benefits of a comprehensive weight loss plan.

  8. Great advice! 🙂 Blueberries are very polyphenol-rich! I eat them just about every day; i eat a lot of cherries too. I do not eat strawberries, as i’ve read (in more than one article) that strawberries tend to be over-sprayed and contaminated.

    1. Yes they are the wonder fruits. Blueberries boast the highest antioxidant supply of all fresh fruit. Antioxidants serve several roles in your body, including boosting your immune system. Those found in blueberries, including anthocyanin, vitamin C, copper, and iron, work to amplify your immunity so you can prevent infections. A strong immune system can mean fewer colds, fevers, and other viral and bacterial diseases and infections.

    1. That’s great Steven. Blueberries are low in calories and high in fiber and vitamins C and K. They also contain potent antioxidants, including anthocyanins, the plant pigments that give them their deep purplish-blue color, and other compounds that help protect cells from free radical damage and have anti-inflammatory properties.
