While people have been meditating for thousands of years, it wasn’t until the 1970s that scientists started focusing on its brainy benefits. Numerous studies suggest that regular meditation (about six hours a week) may actually change brain structure.

Here are some of the ways in which meditation can make you smarter :

  • Focus – Meditation improves focus by causing an increase in cortical thickness in regions of the brain responsible for attention.
  • Mood – Meditation increases dopamine and serotonin levels by stimulating regions of the brain which are associated with happiness and positivity.
  • Stress Reduction – Meditation decreases stress and anxiety by down regulating cortisol and adrenaline creating a state of deep relaxation in which our breathing, pulse rate, blood pressure, and metabolism are decreased.
  • Cognition – Meditation improves cognitive function, mindfulness and the ability to sustain focus by increasing grey matter, brain volumes and cerebral blood flow.

It’s also worth noting that there are many different types of meditation, and certain people may benefit more from one meditation style over another. So if you’re looking to get some big results from a little inward reflection, choose a type of meditation you like and feel most comfortable doing. From mantra to mindfulness and Zen to qigong, there are plenty of ways to get that third eye in focus.

  1. Six hours at a stretch or a random range of time on different days to make it equal six hours in a week?

    1. Personally, I think an hour at a time is too much, I don’t go beyond 40 minutes. I know other folks do an hour just fine.

Don’t obsess too much about how long to sit. Start with whatever’s comfortable for you. Five or ten minutes is fine. If you feel like you can sit longer than that, then do. Twenty or thirty minutes twice a day is a good practice.

Far more important than figuring out the “correct” amount of time to sit, is maintaining consistency. Meditation should be something that just becomes a regular fixture of your life, like eating and sleeping. Every day. That’s how meditation really starts to leap off the cushion and into your daily life.

  3. Good info. I’ve heard a lot about meditation and it’s implications but never really tried it. Did it once, I dozed off to sleep. And it’s was distracting to focus. Multiple thoughts cascade. Eventually, gave it up.

    1. Hi Manohar, well these are some of the common reasons why people give up meditation. Habit forming takes times so start small and be regular about it.

    1. Thank you Mahendra. I am glad you liked this sensitive post on meditation as there are many versions of understanding on meditation. Trinity College Dublin researchers report controlled breathing, a key element of meditation, directly affects noradrenaline levels in the brain. The study suggests controlled breathing can enhance attention and improve overall brain health. Thank you for stopping by today.

    1. Hi Jay, regular meditation can work wonders. Meditation training improves a wide range of willpower skills, including attention, focus, stress management, impulse control and self-awareness. It changes both the function and structure of the brain to support self-control. For example, regular meditators have more gray matter in the prefrontal cortex. Thank you for stopping by.
