Dizziness is a nonspecific term used by patients to describe a sensation of altered spatial orientation. It encompasses a wide range of symptoms that vary from violent, spinning vertigo to vague symptoms of unsteadiness, lightheadedness, imbalance, disorientation, incoordination, and clumsiness. Vertigo is medically defined as an illusion of movement, or any abnormal sensation of motion between a patient and his or her surroundings.

Here are a few symptoms to look out for :

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abnormal Movement of the Eyeballs
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing Noise in the Ears

Here are a few essential oils which can help you with vertigo.

  • Ginger Oil : They help in soothing the nerves and restoring coordination in movement.
  • Cypress Oil : Aid in improved cognitive functioning, enhance alertness and vigilance and cure dizziness and nausea in no time.
  • Lavender Oil : The sweet and calming essence of lavender makes it highly beneficial for the treatment of vertigo induced by anxiety, insomnia, and stress.
  • Peppermint Oil : The best medication for vertigo sickness as it can un-clutter the airways, un-cloud the mind, and establish healthy oxygenation of blood to the brain.
  • Basil Oil : The antioxidant and anti inflammatory action of basil essential oil helps in soothing the nerves and relaxing the mind.
  • Clary Sage Oil : The sedative and soothing properties of this oil aids in the improvement of cognitive abilities and helps in the elimination of dizziness, headache, nausea, and lack of coordination.
  • Frankincense Oil : Remarkably effective in inducing calmness, balancing the vestibular nervous system, relaxing the taut nerves, relieving anxiety, and restoring stability and balance.

When patients query you about dizziness, listen carefully to the patient’s description, probing for vertigo’s hallmark symptom of the “room spinning.” Ask if symptoms occur suddenly with certain body movements such as rolling over in bed or looking up. Slow onset suggests infections and/or central nervous system disorders; rapid onset is associated with inner ear disorders. Vertigo accompanied by hearing loss signals infections, head trauma, or central nervous system disorders. Take it seriously.

  1. I was thinking, how to use these oils, I thought to apply to hair 😆. But read in the comments section that it needs to put in ears. New info, never came across this.

What could be the causes for this phenomena? Is it stressful lifestyle or irregular food habits/smoking or drinking?

    1. Hahhha Vertigo is caused by problems in the brain or inner ear, including sudden head movements, inflammation within the inner ear due to a viral or bacterial inner ear infection, Meniere’s disease, tumors, decreased blood flow to the base of the brain, multiple sclerosis, head trauma and neck injury, migraine headaches, or complications from diabetes.

  5. Depending on your age and underlying medical conditions, in general the older you are the more serious. Sudden onset of vertigo can be a manifestation of a stroke. I don’t see essential oils working unless probably the cause is something like benign positional vertigo BPV which is caused by aging and dying of cells which fall in the canal and excite that false sense of movement which is perceived as vertigo either you’re spinning in the room or the room spinning around you, or maybe motion sickness, but make sure you have a benign vertigo before just going with oils to relieve the symptom.

  8. Good to know which essential oils work for vertigo but if before putting in the ear you need to dilute them in the carrier oil. Some are strong and might burn the skin.

    1. Yes that is correct. Use it as a infuser instead.
