Every day involves a constant and massive amount of work at times seemingly overwhelming. Our personal expectations are high as well. We think that we should successfully complete everything on our plates. We demand personal excellence. The work is complex, involving significant decision making and problem solving skills. When we struggle to get it all done and done correctly we think it must be the way we are working. Maybe our time management skills need work. Maybe we should attend a class on decision making techniques. The truth is your brain has biological limits. No matter how much effort you put in, you can’t sit there and make
brilliant decisions all day.

Here are few questions that you need to ask yourself in order to prioritise things and bring more focus in your life :

  • Get clear on your priorities. Clear priorities allow you to focus on what matters most. What are your top 3 priorities?
  • Environment. Discomfort equals distraction. How could you improve your environment?
  • Timers. How could you use a timer to super focus on a project, or limit time sucks like emails & social media?
  • Finish What You Start. Avoid brain fog and overwhelm. When & where could you do that little bit extra, and get things finished?
  • One Thing At a Time. Where does multitasking reduce your focus? Do one ting well instead of several things distractedly.
  • Courage To Say “No”. Where could you say “No” more? When we say “Yes” to someone else, it often means saying “No” to something in our own life.
  • Understand Your Focus Boosters. What boosts your focus? e.g. a cup of coffee, stroking a pet, using headphones, classical music or taking a “stretch” break.
  • Self Care. Do you ignore your needs and then end up distracting yourself instead? Where could more self-care increase your focus?
  • Eliminate Distraction. When focus is required you need zero tolerance for distractions. What are the top 3 ways you distract yourself.
  • Discipline. When chosen freely, discipline is uplifting & inspiring. Where do you need to be more disciplined in service of you?

They say awareness is the first step to self-improvement. Self-awareness is the path to understanding your behaviour and actions. When you understand yourself, you can make the necessary changes to achieve success.

      1. Ambiguity in this, will put us in unwanted ride of emotions. For instance, had I not said no, he/she would have felt better. We start putting themselves in our shoes and think. Something which is not needed. Empathy is fine. But this is altogether a different one.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a message. Most people don’t have trouble with focusing. They have trouble with deciding.
What I mean is that most healthy humans have a brain that is capable of focusing if we get the distractions out of the way. Have you ever had a task that you absolutely had to get done? What happened? You got it done because the deadline made the decision for you. Maybe you procrastinated beforehand, but once things became urgent and you were forced to make a decision, you took action.

    1. I am glad you liked it so much. Focus can only occur when we have said yes to one option and no to all other options. In other words, elimination is a prerequisite for focus. As Tim Ferriss says, “What you don’t do determines what you can do.” Of course, focus doesn’t require a permanent no, but it does require a present no. You always have the option to do something else later, but in the present moment focus requires that you only do one thing. Focus is the key to productivity because saying no to every other option unlocks your ability to accomplish the one thing that is left.

    1. Yes Deepika, we know everything. It’s our focus indeed. The ability to concentrate on something in your environment and direct mental effort toward it is critical for learning new things, achieving goals, and performing well across a wide variety of situations. Whether you are trying to finish a report at work or competing in a marathon, your ability to focus can mean the difference between success and failure.

  10. Hi Garima,

Man! Yes, I see the distractors that plaque us as a society, especially the social media interruptions. There is also a certain level of maturity for us as we see the need for focus and we have a reason to complete things. In reality some of my students would get this, but some are pulled in too many directions.

    Thanks,

    Gary

    1. Indeed Gary. We need to bring more awareness, more focus. A little alone time would be beneficial for starters.

      1. Yes, isn’t funny today that some view alone time as lonely time. We need down time, too.
