Have you ever had moments when you felt you weren’t ‘good enough’? These were moments of Low Self-Esteem. They sabotage your ability to live a happy and fulfilling life. The key to overcoming low self-esteem (or anything else) is understanding what it is and what causes it. Once you understand, you’ll know what not to do anymore and can begin taking the right steps towards creating a life you really love.

Here are a few ways to conquer self doubt :

  • Calm Yourself – Don’t allow your mind to race. Breathe down from your favourite number to calm yourself and think more clearly.
  • Make Small Changes – Baby steps. Self doubt holds you back, so accomplish small things. Allow yourself to show that you can make positive changes in your life.
  • Don’t Compare – Comparisons are not good. You are unique and different. Don’t follow others paths, don’t wish or want what they have. Think about yourself.
  • Have no Regrets – The fear of failure hold you back. Do it, do it. Do what you want to do. Do what is one your mind. Don’t miss the opportunity. Don’t wait any longer.
  • Learn & Try Again – Don’t give up. Don’t stop trying, especially when something goes wrong. Learn and keep going. Keep working to achieve better.
  • It’s Worth the Effort – Your efforts will pay off. The longer you keep going the more you learn and the better you get. It will get easier.
  • Don’t Rush – Remain patient. You should not be your worst critic and bring yourself down, you are trying to get better to no longer doubt yourself. The progress will show.

Your presence makes a difference – this is the power YOU are.

    1. Think about situations when you have lost your confidence. Was there a common trigger? It could be things like being interrupted, being rushed before a meeting or making a suggestion that is ignored. What causes you to shut down or feel inadequate? If you know your triggers you can de-personalize them and have a strategy for recovering quickly.

    1. Change your thoughts and you change your world—it’s true. Thoughts control how you feel, and your feelings control your actions. Internalizing and acting on this simple concept is the most fundamental change you can make today. If you want to feel strong and confident, thoughts like Do I belong? Do I know enough? and What if I don’t sound smart enough? must be left behind. Stay laser focused on the contribution you want to make. If your thoughts are immersed in I want to contribute then you show up differently than if you’re driven by I hope they like me or I hope I am good enough.

    1. Now, I believe in authenticity. However, if you take it so far as to reveal every fear or sign of self-doubt, you will undermine yourself. Displaying confidence matters. No matter how you may feel on a given day, believe that you are a professional with a contribution to make. You may be the youngest, the least experienced or different than others in the room. Carry on and believe that you are there for a reason. And it’s not to get everyone else’s approval—it’s to contribute.

    1. Self-doubt occurs when we are lack of confidence or feeling incapable of doing things we need to do. A certain level of self-doubt is good because it indicates you understand what you need to improve in order to do a better job. (Just remember that doesn’t mean what you are doing is not good!)

    1. Once you embrace that failure is inevitable, learning how to build resilience is the next step. Clinical psychologist Meg Jay told TED.com, “Resilient people tend to be active copers. They say, ‘What am I going to do about this?’ versus, ‘When will I be released from this?’ It may not be solved overnight, but every problem can be approached somehow.”

    1. The first step to overcoming self-doubt is acknowledging it—but how do you work through your fear when you’re afraid your work product is terrible? It’s hard to believe in yourself when your work isn’t great, but remember everyone starts somewhere, and at one point everyone has been bad at their job, especially the most successful among us. You won’t conquer self-doubt in a day, a week, a month or even a year, it is going to take years, perhaps decades of your life to learn how to rein in your doubts and keep working.

    1. Glad you liked it Jude. First, when your inner doubts bubble up, be quick. Don’t let them spin out of control or grow from a whisper to a stream of discouraging sentences. Instead, talk back to that doubtful part of yourself.
