Who Am I?

Am I the body? Am I the thought? Am I the emotion? Am I the mind? Who am I? Let us do some experiments.

Move your arms. What are you doing? I AM moving my arms. What are being moved? The arms. Are you the arms? No. Who is moving the arms? I AM. I AM is the mover, the arms are the objects being moved.

Move your legs. What are you doing? I AM moving my legs. What are being moved? The legs. Are you the legs? No. Who is moving the legs? I AM.

Move your whole body. What are you doing? I AM moving my body. What is being moved? The body. Are you the body? No. Who is moving the body? I AM. I AM is the mover, the body is the object being moved.

Are you the mind? No. The mind of just a subtle instrument of the I AM or the soul. The soul uses the mind to create thoughts and emotions. Therefore, thoughts and emotions are just the products. The mind corresponds to the computer that can generate and process data. The I AM or the soul corresponds to the person using the computer. The mind is not the I AM just as you, the person using the computer, are not the computer. You are the I AM. You are the soul.

You are I AM. You are immortal. As the Lord Krishna said in The Bhagavad Gita, the soul or the self cannot be killed, cannot be slain, cannot br drowned, and cannot be burned. It is immortal. Just as a person changes his garments from day to day, a person changes his body from incarnation to incarnation.

    1. This question – asked so often – suggests that there is actually a plausible answer. Almost as if our being were a fixed thing. People who ask this sort of question are typically struggling with their identity and are searching for a core sense of themselves. The irony is that the more you seek to identify who you are, the more fragile you are likely to feel about yourself. There may be an inverse correlation between the question being asked and the ease with which you experience your life. The emphasis shouldn’t be on discovering who you are (what is buried beneath) but on facilitating the emergence of what you’d like to experience.

      1. True that!!
They r struggling because they don’t know who the real them actually are and as they search they tend to get acquainted with diff. People and they tend u criticize the.selves and as u said they become fragile.
And for me if u don’t know who u r , time will reveal itself cause everyone is in the progress of growing and as time changes, goal changes , perspective changes so does a person evolve as someone with something new, and worrying abt it won’t help cause u r going to adapt and change, so the identity in the end just tends to be the mere reminder of who u were.

    1. Our identity should be seen as an ongoing process. Rather than a static snapshot, we should embrace a flowing sense of self, whereby we are perpetually re-framing, re-organizing, re-thinking and re-considering ourselves. How different would life be if rather than asking who am I, we contemplated how we’d like to engage life? A sense of inadequacy often informs the question around “Who am I?” As people engage the deepening complexity of understanding themselves, they would fare much better to devote themselves to the unfolding process of life. Witnessing our thoughts, not reacting out of old habit, and becoming present enable us to better craft our lives. As such, the identity that we seek fires the wave of life, enriched by the flow.

      1. Very true! It is so much important to witness our habits and thoughts.

The most important thing is to re-organise ourselves by time to time..in order to design our life and exploring self, true identity!

      2. An average human being thinks about 50,000 – 60,000 thoughts on any given day. We are an embodiment of our thoughts. They influence our day, happiness and overall life satisfaction.

  2. “Are you the mind? No. The mind of just a subtle instrument of the I AM or the soul” is a hypothesis. I don’t think we can prove it right or wrong. Descartes after long thoughts ended up on the proof of existence solely realizing he could think(ego cogito ergo sum).

    1. “Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent [the material body] there is no endurance and of the eternal [the soul] there is no change. This they have concluded by studying the nature of both.” —Sri Krishna, Bhagavad-gita 2.16

Understanding the difference between body and soul—between matter and spirit—is the beginning of spiritual life and the only basis for true self-realization.

      1. I’d love to agree. But because you used the term ‘experiment’ I was just mentioning an observation. But don’t you think we all could believe in things without fully understanding them? Like a leap of faith? Just like how a normal person would believe in soul- because nothing we know can yet observe or feel it. There’s no proof of its existence. It is indeed quoted in books, but the experimental way is with proofs and observations that matches predictions… Which unfortunately we don’t have. I’m not telling souls doesn’t exist, but whoever believes in their existence and those who don’t, both can 100% be sure that they are right. And the worst part is our brain is capable of creating hallucinations as well. Anyways keep writing, it’s always good to discuss these thoughts with like minded people – clears something’s in head. Again, my question was, have you ever come across any conclusive statements anywhere to Believe that souls, that Transcends time, exists?

      2. If there is conclusive research then we won’t have to “believe” in their existence. That is an oxymoron statement. Belief is an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof. But to your question yes there have been researches which provide the existence of souls 🙂

      3. So you are saying belief itself is a leap of faith…

      5. The first paper actually studies some arguments against the existenceof soul, not that souls exist lol.
Philosophicaly, he asks that if Souls are not made of matter and only matter can
have location in time and space. So in virtue of what does
your soul belong to you and not me? Also couple of other questions. One amongst the logical questions he asks is why would brain injury cause character change if it belongs to a non-physical soul. (Would love your thought on this question specifically)
But it was indeed an interesting read. Thanks for referring 🙂

      7. Well I think it’d be lovely if souls existed, just sucks that people cannot prove it or disprove it atleast with what we have till now. And I personally lean to a side which tends to negate the existence of souls, but try to see if it is there and hence I debate with everyone who believes in one to share their experiences and knowledge.
Also I was not intentionally being passive aggressive; it’s just that I was expecting a better paper on that link.
And apologies if u were offended 🙂

    1. Thank you. I am glad you liked it. Matter is temporary, and spirit is eternal. Therefore we eternal souls are more important than our bodies. To understand this point is real knowledge. We are by nature eternally happy and full of knowledge. The human body affords us the opportunity to perform spiritual activities that will free us from getting further material bodies, which are by nature full of suffering.

    1. Realize that connecting to your soul is the easiest thing you could possibly do. You are doing it now, you just don’t recognize it. The problem is that you and everyone else in the world has been taught alienation from their natural and easy truth. So, we perceive distances that don’t exist. But. it is the power of our own belief that allows for this illusion. Thanks Nilesh. I am glad you are liking these series on soul.

  6. Okay, just to add what I read somewhere.
The brain (mind) is a tool you use to communicate with the higher self.
Like this… Think of an already existing universal consciousness – a universal resource with all the information that is in the world. A universal mind.
Then as human beings, each of us has a brain that we use to tap into the universal mind.
Everything we know, it is because we have set our mind to receive from the universal mind. The difference in people’s intelligence now comes with how much information our brains are able to receive from the source.
Sort of like aligning your mind with the universal one/God
Better alignment means more knowledge, enlightenment, etc.
    I hope I’m making sense.

    1. Yes Yes absolutely you are making sense. ‘Men ought to know that from the brain, and from the brain alone, arise our pleasures, joys, laughter and jests, as well as our sorrows, pains, griefs and tears. Through it, in particular, we think, see, hear and distinguish the ugly from the beautiful, the bad from the good, the pleasant from the unpleasant… I hold that the brain is the most powerful organ of the human body… wherefore I assert that the brain is the interpreter of consciousness…’ (Hippocrates: On the sacred disease. 1. Thank you Susan. “I Am” are the most powerful words in the world. What are “I am” Statements? Quite simply, it’s a list of things you’d like to have, do and be. And I positively love it. The concept of creating this list, or of saying these statements or affirmations is not new.

  10. Maaori would pose the question as ‘What am I’…The old people would say ‘You are the source and the source is you…. birth by birth by birth by birth’…. To answer your question they would say ‘You are you and you are all Potential as from the source you come to the source you go’… Great post Garima…:)
