Are your expectations for healthy eating too unrealistic?  Are you making it impossible for yourself to succeed?  If so, maybe it’s time to test those expectations against reality. What comes to mind when you read the words healthy eating?

Here are a few healthy eating rules.

  • Eat Real – Real foods is clean food. If you can imagine it growing out of the ground or being raised on a farm, it’s real and real is good.
  • Choose Just One – If a food has only one ingredient, think milk, broccoli, dry quinoa, raw chicken, or beans, it’s clean.
  • Eat Naked – Foods that don’t come in packages, like fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and fish you can get form the butcher or seafood counter, and grains, nuts, and spices you can buy in bulk, are clean.
  • Go Organic – When you opt for organic, you get the cleanest kind of food, grown or raised without pesticides, insecticides chemical fertilisers, hormones, steroids, and/or chemical laden feed.
  • Eat What You Can Pronounce – If you can read all the ingredients in a food out loud without thinking, its probably clean.
  • Prioritise Plants – Vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre, and nearly devoid of the calories, sugar and toxins known to cause weight gain and health issues. Only problem? Most of us don’t eat enough of them.
  • Give Up the White Stuff – If you really want to eat clean, avoid sugar in its carious forms and disguises. If you want to sweeten, opt for unprocessed types like raw honey or pure maple syrup, both of which go straight from hive or tree, respectively, to your mouth.
  • Cook At Home – Most meals from restaurants, takeout joints, and supermarkets are high in sugar and made with processed ingredients. When you cook, you choose exactly what does (or doesn’t) go into your body.
  • Focus On What Matters – Paleo, raw, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, diary-free, soy-free? As long as you’re eating real food, choose the diet that works best for you.
  • Enjoy Every Bite – Clean eating is about enjoying delicious, real food each and every bite, If it doesn’t taste good, don’t eat it.

  1. Two of the more common responses I receive are that it is more expensive to eat clean and then you end up eating more because clean doesn’t fill you. I disagree to both responses. I think just requires more discipline and planning ahead to be successful. I think balanced eating throughout the day will prevent you from becoming hungry. All in moderation. My grandmother used to say, “You’re supposed to eat to keep from becoming hungry, not wait until you’re hungry.” I’ve found that to be true because you tend to overeat when waiting until you’re hungry. What are your thoughts?

    1. I agree with your grandma. In a study published in the Nutrition Journal, researchers looked at the effect eating a nutrient-dense diet would have on hunger. They asked 768 people to change their diet from one low in nutrients, a typical junk food and processed food diet, to one that’s nutrient dense, with greater amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants like fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods. While on the two diets, they were asked to rate hunger levels at various times throughout the day along with other physical and emotional symptoms. The results? When on a nutrient-dense diet, the participants experienced a dramatic decrease in hunger – even when they skipped meals, and they tolerated periods of hunger better than when they ate a less nutrient-rich diet. Plus, they experienced fewer unpleasant physical sensations when they missed a meal like headaches, anxiety, and changes in mood. All in all, their hunger was better controlled and they experienced fewer physical symptoms of hunger when they ate a diet rich in nutrients.
