Confidence is a very attractive thing, and meeting a new man can put it to the test. Confidence is not something that comes from what you drive, how much attention you draw to yourself or how much money you’ve made in the past.  Confidence is about what you truly think you can produce in the present.  It’s your true feeling of self worth.

Here are a few ways in which you can appear confident even when you really are not :

  • Stand up Straight – Keeping your back straight, your shoulders back and your head held high displays status, power and that you are in control of your life.
  • Keep you Chin and Head Up – Whether you are standing in a crowd or walking down a street, always keep your head up and your eyes looking straight ahead.
  • Keep Hands Out of Pockets – Keeping your hands visible indicates you feel confident in yourself, your current situation and ready to handle anything.
  • Gesture with Palms Upwards – Gesturing with your palms facing up will make you appear more confident as it gives the impression of honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Don’t Fidget – Fidgeting is a clear sign of nervousness, worry or anxiety and most of us fidget without even realising it.
  • Maintain Eye Contact – Good eye contact is probably the most important technique to practice if you wish to appear calm, honest, friendly and confident.
  • Stand In an Open Stance – Standing with your feet too close together can give the impression that you are timid. Aim to have your feet in line with your shoulders.
  • Smile – Smiling has a powerful effect, a genuine smile communicates that you are friendly, honest and trustworthy and makes you more attractive.
  • Develop a Firm Handshake – A firm, solid handshake can give you a immediate impression of confidence while a link handshake can communicate weakness.
  • Take Big Steps – Take long purposeful steps, rather than short, quick or hurried steps. A slower, deliberate walk will make you appear confident and in control of your life.

  4. Apparently appearing confident is more powerful than being confident and not showing it. The first impression.

    1. Yes Indeed, Fake it till you make it. Having confidence comes from focusing on your audience, their needs, their problems and how you can help them solve them. A confident speaker knows the audience members see him as an authority and want him to be successful. His success ultimately means their success.

  8. This is all really useful from emphasizing posture to taking “purposeful steps.” It all comes across as doable as well. I think your clear, positive tone has something to do with that.

    1. Good points. I also believe confidence has a lot to do with positive thinking. Training your mind to think positive can be achieved by leveraging a simple concept. Your mind has enough bandwidth to only focus on one thought at a time. All you have to do is keep it focused on uplifting thoughts until you form the same types of neural pathways that are created when you establish a new habit. When a negative event occurs, remember that it’s your response that truly determines the outcome. Always look for the positive response or optimistic lesson when such events take place. 9. If I may speak on the opposite of confidence, being fear…

We become that way due to a lack of contact. Especially in this world we have, today, of being isolated due to the virus, it is indeed something that, although necessary, provokes a person’s anxiety. Too much isolation, and no matter how introverted a person is, or has always been, turns them into fearing the contact (general conversation) of another human being.

We can become introverted all we want, though what this also promotes is a belief that we can conquer much, on our own, with our own skills, and ever only ourselves.

Fear is the feeling of loneliness. It is a darkness that we find all too familiar, when we are trapped by four walls, during all days. I do hope, however, that after this virus is over, that the first thing people will be craving is to hug another person, without “social distancing”. We can kiss without masks. We can lay a hand on another’s shoulder without afterwards obsessively washing it, like we touched a hazardous material.

Yes, confidence is only ever achieved, in my eyes, by actually doing what we’ve been avoiding.

    1. Ah beautiful. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The key to overcoming fears is to face them quickly and bravely, without giving yourself time to be afraid. When you discipline yourself to do the thing you fear, your fear of the situation gradually goes away. You just do what you fear again and again until it holds no more fear for you.

    1. When you’re self-confident, you trust your own judgment and abilities. It means having a strong sense of self-worth and self-belief. You can take immediate steps to project greater self-confidence in the way you behave, and how you approach other people.
