How much time do you spend each day getting better organized? Cut it in half. When it comes to investing time, thought and effort into productively organizing oneself, less is more. In fact, not only is less more, research suggests it may be faster, better and cheaper.

Here are a few steps which you can help in organising your life :

  • Limit yourself to three big items a day on your To-Do list.
  • Commit to decluttering 15 minutes every morning and every night.
  • Associate cleaning with a fun activity like listening to your favourite podcast.
  • Make a habit of putting items away immediately after using them.
  • Have less stuff. Give away everything you don’t need.
  • Every time you buy something new, let go of a like minded item.
  • Have a specific place for everything.
  • Colour code label as much as you can. Make inventory lists.
  • Make organising an automated schedule so you don’t have to think about it.
  • Envision what you want to accomplish in becoming a more clean and organised person.

So which ones do you practice already to stay organised?

    1. Benefits of keeping organized: You can increase your productivity. By keeping organized, you will save time looking for things and will have more time to work on important tasks. As organization can improve the flow of communication between you and your team, you can also make your team more productive.

    1. Well done Christin. The most important benefits of being organised in life is that you can discover you have more time to focus on your own agenda when you actually make time for it! Try writing down and prioritizing time to do something you enjoy. So often we leave ourselves until last! There is no way that you can take care of anyone else – patients, family, friends – if you’re running on fumes. It doesn’t matter what you do – it matters that you do it!

      1. That’s a wise insight, priorities matter. I try my best to live and fulfill everyday to its fullest. Your daily dose, ‘not needing validation’ really stuck with me. It’s very encouraging.

    1. An endless list of things to do constantly looming over you is often the source of stress in your life. Getting organized will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Take the time to examine how you can make adjustments to remove the “stressors” in your life and ultimately reduce your stress levels.

  4. I think another benefit of organization, in addition to greater productivity, is that it’s preventive of greater craziness. When we know where things are, even imperfectly, we’re going to feel better moving forward.

Thank you. It’s a list that can be realized, though I must admit my organizing goes in fits and starts. It’s not seasonal. Somehow the impulse comes upon me, and I start going through things.

    1. Thank you for sharing this. Well I can relate to being super organised sometimes and being less organised other times. It comes and goes.

According to research in the field of occupational health, the more control that you perceive you have in your work, the more job satisfaction and less stress you are likely to experience.
