Frustration happens when things aren’t going as planned or something is keeping you from making progress. Frustration can often lead to anger which can make it even more difficult to cope.

Here are some tips on how you can start dealing with frustration :

  • Recognise Your Warning Signs – Warning signs are changes that happen to you when you begin to feel frustrated. Do you start sweating more? Do you get annoyed easily by other people? Do you feel like crying? All of these could be warning signs that let you know that you are feeling frustrated. It is important to know what you warning signs are because that’s when you should start using coping skills.
  • Freeze – If you feel yourself starting to get frustrated with a task, stop what you’re doing! Pause, if you can, and take time to decide what you should do next. Sometimes, trying to work through your frustrations might only lead to you getting angrier and coping in an unhealthy way. When you freeze, ask yourself what you think would be the best things to do to help your frustration. You could take a break and do something else, try a new idea, or take a deep breath and power On!
  • Use Positive Self Talk – If you’re working on something that is getting you frustrated, try using positive self talk! Say encouraging words and phrases to yourself that will help you feel better and improve your mood. Try saying, “You can do it!” or “You’re doing a great job – just keep at it!”. What are some other things you can say to yourself to keep from getting more frustrated?
  • Ask For Help From Others – Sometimes getting new ideas from other people can be helpful. Let someone know if you’re having trouble figuring something out or if you are starting to feel frustrated. Let them know what they might be able to do or say to help you feel better. Sometimes just being able to open up to someone else about our feelings is helpful.

    1. Most welcome Chief. I am glad you liked it. Frustration and anger affect people emotionally and physically. You may work out these feelings by talking with someone or through physical activity (such as running, cleaning house, or punching a pillow). Working out frustration and anger in a physical way helps relieve muscle tension and may reduce restlessness and irritation.

  2. Thank you for this. I get so easily flustered and have to step away from things more and more often. I am still looking for a strategy that works for me. This was very enlightening and helpful

    1. Then I am glad you found this post Matthew. Also what is important is to recognize things that you cannot change. There may be things that you can do nothing about. Simply writing them down is often helpful. Reminding yourself that some things are beyond your control also helps. Letting go of the wish that you could change them may be hard to do. You may need to remind yourself daily or many times throughout the day that these things are beyond your control.

      2. Yup. Okay everytime you see a toddler throwing tantrum either in a family function or a mall, what does the parent do? They ask the child to sush so that we doesn’t create more drama and draw attention. Typical isn’t it?

  4. Garima,

That was me yesterday. Perfect timing and these things work. It is usually a lot of small little hornet or pin pricks that jab at me and get built up. Seeing them, naming them, and walking away helps.

    Thank you,

    Gary

    1. Most welcome Gary. On a positive note, Feeling frustrated will also help stimulate your imagination and mobilize your senses. The reason why this happens is because your frustrations create internal dissatisfaction. You’re not happy about your circumstances, and yet you’re still determined to get things done.
