What would happen to your productivity if you had a way to block Internet access to your favorite time-wasting websites like Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and trashy celebrity gossip blogs? If you are like most people, you would probably get a lot more work done.
Here are ways you can increase your focus for maximising your productivity. Using a combination of visual reminders, productive procrastination, time management, and streamlining your daily to-do lists, incorporating just a few of these habits will make a huge positive impact on your day-to-day workflow.
- Use a kitchen timer – Set your kitchen timer (or cell phone) to 25-30 minutes and focus completely on finishing one task.
- Use apps to block distracting websites – Install an app to block distracting websites during work hours.
- Focus on 3 tasks per day – Once you are finished with those 3 tasks, create another To-Do list with just three items.
- Productive procrastination – Itching to take a break? Go running, organise your work space, run ask errand, do something productive.
- Set a specific time to check and answer emails – This is far more efficient than answering and reading emails all day long.
- Create a wall calendar of X’s – Have a task you need to do everyday? Make a big X on a wall calendar and create a chain of X’s as a visual reminder to not slack on this one task.
- Set a mini-reward system for tedious tasks – Rewards, not just for kids! Every time you finish a particularly difficult task, give yourself a small reward which can be small as a snack or a cup of tea.
- Get your most important task finishes first thing in the morning – Everyday, no matter how busy your day gets, you will have successfully finished something crucial.
- Know thyself – Observe your particular habits, preferences, weaknesses, etc. And utilise this knowledge for maximum productivity.
