Your Simple Herbal Detox
Many herbs have cleansing properties and can be used as part of a natural detox programme to encourage the body to eliminate waste.
Herbs have been used to cleanse and detoxify the body for hundreds of years and today a number of herbs are still used for their powerful cleansing and detoxifying properties. Herbal detoxing gives the body a helping hand in removing harmful substances, without the side effects, such as lethargy and headaches, that are common with more extreme programmes.
Administering herbal remedies – Herbal remedies can be administered in a variety of ways. Infusion of flowers and leaves, and decoction of more dense and woody herbs, are taken as teas or tonics, absorbed via the digestive system. Herbal baths allow a herbs properties to be absorbed via the skin, while culinary herbs, such as garlic and parsley, are as diverse as they are delicious. Herbs with detox properties can be easily incorporated into your diet by adding a few leaves to a salad.
Relaxing herbal baths – Relaxation is an essential part of detoxification, and hot water baths, particularly when infused with calming herbs, helps us to relax and de-stress. The warm bath water raises the body’s temperature causing the body to perspire, eliminating toxins in the sweat. For best results, herbal baths should be taken every 3-4 days. Use a muslin bag to a stocking to infuse herbs into your bath water. You will need :
- 1 handful of lemon balm, chamomile, or lavender.
- A muslin bag or stocking
Place a handful of herbs in the muslin bag or stocking; tie over the hot tap so the water flows through it. After a long soak, lie down, keep yourself warm and relax. Add chamomile or lemon balm to your bath for a relaxing detox experience.
