All About Sea Kelp

Sea Kelp is extracted from the Luminaria Digitata. It can grow up to 200 feel in length and it’s commonly found in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The biggest importer of seaweed is Japan as they use it in their national dishes. Not only that, but they use it in their dental and hair care products too.

Typically, sea kelp is extracted for supplement use due to its rich content of Iodine. Depending on the richness of the source, sea kelp tends to be anywhere between 33 and 75% iodine. Sea Kelp is also rich in potassium, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, sodium and magnesium. Not to mention Vitamin B, C, E, D and K.

Seek Kelp supplements are a popular source of iodine because many do not like to take the chemical source which is potassium iodide. Both possess excellent Iodine content, and both are harmless. 70-80% of the body’s iodine is stored in the thyroid gland.

Iodine deficiency is called Goitre, symptoms of this include, enlarged neck and thyroid gland, lethargy, difficulty swallowing, coughing and pain when touching the enlarged area.

Here are some health indications of iodine :

  • Iodine becomes particularly important during periods of growth such as puberty. Iodine works alongside the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine).
  • Iodine is also important during pregnancy. It is believed that inadequate levels of iodine in the pre-natal diet can lead to reduced IQ and reading abilities of the child.

      It combines with tyrosine – an amino acid – to create T3 and T4, thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism and other physiological functions throughout the body. As sea kelp is the richest natural source of iodine it can help to regulate metabolism and in turn affect weight loss and gain.
