If you want to banish your fridge, here are some tips.

  • Use a pot-in-a-pot “refrigerator” (also known as a “zeer pot”) – A zeer pot is a clay pot placed within a larger pot with wet sands in between the pots and a wet cloth placed on top. The evaporation of the outer liquid draws heat from the inner pot, which can be used to store perishables like fruit, vegetables and meat. Note : The zeer pot works best in hot, dry climates.
  • Downgrade from a big refrigerator to a small freezer and a cooler. Store your perishables in a large cooler with 2L soda bottles filled with frozen water. When the water melts, place bottles back in freezer and switch out with other 2L frozen soda bottles.
  • Turn your basement in to a root cellar – Commonly used for root veggies, underground or partially underground cellars are a great way to keep veggies, fruits and nuts at low temperatures.
  • Keep your veggies watered like flowers – Keep veggies fresh before consumption by keeping the tips of the stems watered.
  • It’s okay to leave eggs out on the counter – n cool weather, raw eggs can remain unrefrigerated for up to a month.
  • Keep condiments in the pantry and sticks of butter in a covered butter dish – Butter can last up to a week unrefrigerated.
  • Get in touch with your pioneer roots and can/preserve/dehydrate/pickle your fruits and veggies.
  • Can’t make the plunge? Consider using a smaller refrigerator or a mini fridge. At the very least, make a conscious effort to waste less food. Be conscious of the food you buy and consume wisely.

  3. In the wintertime if after a party we have too much food left over to fit in the refrigerator, we store it in the garage for a day or 2😊.

  4. May be we can use zeer pot for water but we need to use freezer or cooler for vegetables or left out food! So I think it’s impossible to live without refrigerator! 😇
