I often hear people explain how they meditate “in their own way” and it’s interesting. If they truly understood meditation, they would never compare it to a long walk in the woods or listening to music. Meditation transports you beyond space and time into a realm beyond the senses where you can truly gain clarity. That is true meditation, and the experience can only be replicated by sitting still, closing your eyes, and going within. As you practise meditation more and more, you will eventually discover a truly still and blissful inner world that you were unaware of because you were always so focused on the outside world. You simply cannot comprehend that deep stillness if you have never touched it, just as most people have never experienced true love. True meditation contains something sacred and spiritual that no substitute practise can replicate. Anything you do that involves the senses only invites distractions into your experience, so you will never achieve true meditation.

What’s in the Silence?
When you’re in a state of meditation and have slipped into that “other place,” you find deep stillness. It is accompanied by a sense of bliss. It transports you beyond time and space, beyond this manifestation, to a more expansive place. When you reach this level of consciousness, the worries you had a few minutes ago seem trivial. Nothing seems urgent or even relevant in that place, from your financial problems to what you’re going to make for dinner. As a result, it temporarily relieves stress and allows you to think clearly. There are numerous possibilities. You might find some answers there. The clarity you gain there will help you navigate the rest of your day and reduce anxiety. It can also serve as a reminder that you are a soul having a human experience and can connect you to a higher realm of existence. In this quiet place, you recall your true purpose so that you can begin living more authentically.

Meditation as opposed to Meditative
I distinguish between meditation and meditative states. A meditative state occurs when you go for a long walk and fall into a kind of rhythm where you find clarity in movement. The same is true for long periods of reading, sitting in a silent room, or gardening. These are not the same as meditation. When you are distracted from your problems by a therapeutic activity, you are never allowing yourself to look within. Only by removing the five senses’ pollution from our minds can we truly achieve a state of meditation. We can truly experience what’s inside us by removing as much input from the five senses as possible (sitting in silence, closing our eyes, and removing distractions like touch and temperature). This is how we start to heal from trauma. Looking within is too frightening for many people, so they opt for meditative activities rather than true meditation. What makes it so frightening? Because there could be a lot of uncomfortable truths lurking in our shadows. Healing can be excruciatingly painful at times, especially when you have to confront unpleasant truths. However, I believe that meditation is the only way to truly achieve this level of deep healing.

Consider taking a meditation class right now! I frequently teach meditation classes. It warms my heart to be able to pass on the wisdom of this centuries-old practise.

  2. So, so difficult to clear my mind. When there’s silence, thoughts interrupt constantly, cluttering my mind. I’ve had spiritual experiences that were other worldly, but not during meditation. I envy those who can reach that pure state.

    1. There is no pure state, Lori. It’s subjective. I see a pure state as being aware of those coming in my mind while practising stillness and not getting carried away by the emotion which the thought brings. Hope this helps

      1. Thanks, Garima. By “pure state” I was meaning this: “It is accompanied by a sense of bliss. It transports you beyond time and space, beyond this manifestation, to a more expansive place. When you reach this level of consciousness, the worries you had a few minutes ago seem trivial.”
I’ve been there before, but on rare occasion, and it’s what I envy. But, yes, I understand what you mean by subjective.
