Today’s post will discuss about the art of giving and the psychology behind it. We know about the benefit of giving to the one who receives, they feel appreciated, loved and understood. But what about the benefits to the one who gives? Giving moves us because it freezes us. For a moment we are released from the thoughts of who we are, how we are, how we will be, how people see us, how we could be, how we should be and so on. When we give with an open heart, we remember that we are not alone. You may want to say to me, what? ofcourse I am not alone! True that but let’s try to experiment. In order for this experiment, you need to be stressed. You are not? Congratulations, you are a saint. The experiment is for the rest of us who have some form of stress in our lives. Ask yourself a question that when you are stressed, what amount of waking time do you spend on thinking about your life? Include thoughts about your work, planning thoughts, thoughts about your pressing thoughts, thoughts about your relationship with others? Well, what’s the percentage? It’s higher isn’t it? The more stress your have, the more wrapped up we are in our own life. And when we are wrapped up in our own lives, but become oblivious of the fact that there are others in our lives who have problems and needs.
That’s where the miracle of giving comes in. When we give from an open heart, we suddenly wake up from the me tape and feel connected to others. When we give with a pure heart, we feel joyful. What is a pure heart? It is giving with no thoughts of return, in reality generosity is often associated with some motives. Maybe we are shamed or intimidated into giving or we give to receive a favour, or we give in order to feel good about ourselves. Is impure giving worthless? I don’t think so. Every action is somewhere impure because we are human beings, not saints. At the core of all of us there is a goodness yearning to find expression. Each act of giving emerges from that core of goodness even if a layer of mixed motivation may cloud our aspiration of generosity. Whenever we touch that core of goodness, we are moved. This is natural giving. give freely and enjoy how your core of goodness is touched.
