Avoid Ethnocentrism

Many of us tend to judge other groups of people according to the pre-established standards given by our culture. When people compare their culture to others, they often conclude that their own group is superior (Excellence in business communication, Ninth Edition). We are ethnocentric when we use our cultural norms to make generalization about other people’s cultures and customs. Ethnocentric thinking causes us to make wrong assumptions about other people, it leads sus to make premature judgments.

There are some simple habits that can help us overcome ethnocentrism:

– Avoid Assumptions. Don’t forget that people from different culture would have other customs, beliefs, values or traditions that we should respect.

Learn about other cultures. Research about traditions and lifestyle from another countries; when you keep an open mind to new or different things its easy to learn appreciate culture diversity.

– Avoid judgments. When people around you act differently, do not assume they are making a mistake. Learn to appreciate differences.

– Be respectful. Keep in mind the golden rule. “Treat people the way you want to be treated”

Many problems around the world could be avoid if we follow those basics principles.

  1. Great post. Something that we should all be reminded about. No culture is superior than the other when we view them in light of understanding and open mindedness. It diminishes prejudice and discrimination.

Absolutely. Like everything else Ethnocentrism has both positives and negatives. The positive of this is that it offers confidence and assurance to the culture. It helps the group remain cohesive and centered. The negative is that ethnocentrism can lead to arrogance and a tendency to ignore the useful and even superior knowledge or mindset another group might offer.

  2. Well said ! Only if we learn to accept other cultures and imbibe the positive values from those ! Being judgemental about other cultures closes our mind and narrows our thoughts.

I agree. Ethnocentrism has a major role to play in the society. It offers both advantages and disadvantages prevents change for the better. It is judging others in terms of one’s own cultural standards. … Even for meeting basic needs such as those involving reproduction, food, and survival, humans rely on the culture they have created.

That’s a wonderful practice Ryan. First, ethnocentrism encourages the solidarity of the group. Believing that one’s own ways are the best, encourages a “we” feeling with associates and strengthens the idea that loyalty to comrades and preservation of the basis for superiority are important values.
