Three cheap Amazon fixes, one leaning mirror, zero power tools

A quick note from me: I really appreciate you checking out my blog! Just so you know, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. This means that if you buy something through them, I might earn a little bit of money, at no extra cost to you. There’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything, but if you do, it genuinely helps support the time and love I put into writing these posts.
My cousin walked into my apartment once and said nothing. Just looked around. Nodded slowly. Like a doctor about to give you news.
Then she said, “It’s… clean.”
Clean. That’s what you say about a rental car. And I knew exactly what she meant, because I’d been feeling it for months. I could do my own taxes, I had opinions about mortgage rates, I’d cried in a Costco parking lot and pulled it together before I got to the samples. And my home looked like a hotel that lost its funding.
Nobody teaches this stuff. We’re all out here panic-buying candles called “Cozy Cabin” and hoping for the best. So I fixed it, mostly by accident, with three cheap things you can get on Amazon at 11pm in your pajamas.
One: Command Picture Hanging Strips.
White and orange package. You’ve seen it. You bought it for a dorm in 2012 and it’s been living in your junk drawer next to the batteries that may or may not work.
Get it out.
I had a big mirror leaning against my bedroom wall for eight months. Eight. I told myself I was waiting to find the right spot, which was a lie. I was scared of the drill. Then one night I got sick of myself, stuck four strips on the back, pressed for thirty seconds like the package said, and that was it. Mirror on wall. Like a person.
One tip, since I learned it the hard way: hang things lower than you think. Everybody hangs art up by the ceiling like it’s trying to escape. Aim for the middle of the piece around 57 inches off the floor. That’s eye level. You’re welcome.
Two: warm white LED bulbs.
I know. Lightbulbs. The most boring sentence ever said at a dinner party. Stay with me.
Go look at the bulbs in your lamps right now. If the box said “daylight” or “cool white” or anything that sounds like a hospital, that’s your problem. That’s why your living room feels like you’re about to get bad news and a clipboard.
Grab a multipack of soft white, 2700K. Philips, GE, whatever’s cheap. That number is the whole trick. Same lamp, same couch, same sad fern, totally different room. It’s like your apartment went to therapy and came back with boundaries.
Then turn off the overhead light. I mean it. Overhead lights are for cleaning and interrogations. The first night I tried this, I sat on my couch with just one lamp on and realized I looked rested for the first time since March. That’s not a décor tip. That’s a miracle.
Three: a long adjustable curtain rod.
This one’s almost rude it’s so easy. Most people mount the rod right above the window, like the window’s wearing a tiny hat. Don’t. Get an extra-long black adjustable rod (you know the one, thousands of reviews, never disappoints), put it up close to the ceiling, and let the curtains hang wider than the glass.
Same window. Same curtains. Suddenly the ceiling looks taller and you look like someone who owns a label maker and uses it.
I hung mine crooked the first time. Borrowed my neighbor’s drill, felt very powerful, stepped back, and the whole thing slanted like a sinking ship. Fixed it in ten minutes. Cost less than a takeout order, and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.
The free stuff, because you’ve been patient:
Odd numbers. Three candles look planned. Two look like an accident.
Clear one surface. Just one. The coffee table, the nightstand, whatever. See how it feels.
Get a plant. Not a nice one. A six-dollar grocery store pothos you’ll forget to water, which will forgive you anyway. Which is more than most people do.
Okay, real talk.
I used to think decorating was for people with money and taste and free weekends. Turns out it’s for people who are tired. People who walk in after a long day and want the room to say, hey, you made it.
That’s all. Not Pinterest. Not a showroom. Just a place where your shoulders can finally drop.
So here’s your homework, and yes, I’m serious. Pick ONE thing from this list. Do it before Sunday. Not all three. You’re not a renovation show.
Then hit reply and tell me what you did. Or what you’ve been avoiding. Or the weirdest thing in your home you refuse to throw away. I read every single reply.
And if this kind of writing is your speed, the unpolished, slightly embarrassing, no-throw-pillow-sermon kind, subscribe to the Substack. It’s free. I’ll never tell you to buy a $400 blanket. I’ll just tell you the truth, and sometimes a story about a fern.
