When you’re off travelling the world, chances are that you stick out like a sore thumb, that’s just the way it is. But lots of travellers really don’t help themselves, putting their foot in it by coming out with insensitive or embarrassing things, usually completely unintentionally. It’s impossible to totally blend in with the locals on your travels, but here are some big things you should try to avoid.
Thailand – “I reckon this buddha bloke needs to hit the gym!“
Mocking the Buddha is a big no-go in Thailand and neighbouring countries such as Malaysia. You should respect the Buddha and any images of him because mocking him will not go down well with the locals. Not only this, but you could actually find yourself in trouble with the law too.
Italy – “Excuse Me, can you tell me where the nearest Starbucks is?“
Italians love their coffee, so expect some pretty condescending looks if you go looking for a Starbucks. Instead, head to a proper Italian coffee shop and get yourself clued up on the rules of coffee etiquette.
Canada – “It’s way warmer here than I thought it would be!“
Believe it or not, it’s not freezing cold everywhere you go in Canada. Most of the major Canadian cities are in the south, close to the border with the US, where the winters are a lot milder than you might think, and summers are perfectly fine! It’s only during the dead of winter and as you get further north that you start to experience the extreme cold that you’re probably expecting.
USA – “Alright?“
In the UK it’s common to greet someone by saying “you alright?” or just “alright?”, but in the US, this gets taken a lot more literally, and people will actually think that you’re asking if they’re okay.
Australia – “Put another shrimp on the barbie!“
Probably the cringiest thing you could ever say to an Aussie, this slogan came about as the result of an 80s ad campaign featuring Paul Hogan of Crocodile Dundee. Not only is it a really annoying stereotype for the locals, they don’t even say shrimp, they say prawn like us!
