Because Who Needs Life Plans When You Have Gratitude and Coffee?

Hello, fellow future-fretters! If you’re anything like me, you’ve definitely spent more hours than you’d want to admit fretting about establishing goals, climbing the proverbial ladders, and making sure you’re all dressed up and ready for the day ahead. It’s hammered into us every day: “Plan ahead, be ready, lay the groundwork!” And don’t get me wrong: these are all significant considerations. But lately, I’ve been flirting with a new idea: perhaps learning to enjoy the present moment is the greatest way to prepare for the future.
Listen up. How often have we been so fixated on the horizon that we miss out on the beauty right in front of us? For example, when you’re preparing a Thanksgiving feast and entirely overlook the thrill of unplanned take-out with friends the night before. Sure, foresight is important, such as remembering to buy your Secret Santa present before the last-minute rush. But what if the genuine magic — our true preparation for the future — is concealed in our ability to be grateful in the current moment?
Consider this: little successes in life may be very rewarding. Consider that morning coffee that strikes the spot, or an unexpected text from an old buddy that rekindles fond memories. We frequently find ourselves smiling from the inside out during these times, relishing the simplicity and richness of the present moment. Gratitude in these small moments of life may be like a vitamin boost for the spirit, providing feel-good sentiments that help us anchor.
Now, I am not saying you should abandon your life plans or your day planner. Who doesn’t like crossing items off a to-do list? But perhaps we should take a moment each day to appreciate the present, such as taking the first bite of a delicious cheeseburger when we’re hungry. Instead of freaking out while delayed in traffic, how about turning on your favourite 80s rock hit and channelling your inner rock star?
Even when things aren’t perfect, thankfulness has a strong effect. Embracing a grateful mentality in the midst of hardship is the ultimate act of courage. It’s raising your hat to life and saying, “I see you, and I’m still thankful.” When you’re going through a difficult situation, such as a hard day at work or a stumbling block in your goals, gratitude might help you keep perspective. It keeps you grounded so that bumps on the path do not throw you off track.
The future is similar like the intriguing new restaurant that will debut next month: thrilling and full of potential, but yet unknown. By expressing thankfulness in the present, we may discover that the future provides exactly what we have been seeking all along. Because when life realises we are truly grateful for what we have now, it has a weird way of giving exactly what we need next.
So, let’s attempt to live in the ‘now’ moment, practise thankfulness, and see how the world reacts. After all, isn’t it wonderful that the present is simply just that — a gift?
