Sleep, Joy, and the Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing

Ah, the festive season! That lovely time of year when dazzling lights adorn our streets, holiday music fills the air, and the scent of freshly made cookies wafts through our homes. Thanksgiving has passed, and we are left with full bellies and glad hearts. Christmas is now the focus of everyone’s attention. But if you’re anything like me, the holidays can be a double-edged blade, bringing both happiness and a lot of worry.
The pressure might be unbearable. There’s the anticipation of guests arriving, the burden of cooking a feast for everyone, and impending work deadlines to meet before the year ends. When December arrives, it’s a rush of Christmas parties, present shopping, and attempting to keep everything in order. You may have begun November with the finest intentions, thinking, “I’ve got this under control.” But here we are, a week into December, and the anxiety over postal deadlines and present deliveries is palpable.
But do not worry! Here are three vital suggestions to help you not only survive, but thrive this holiday season. After all, the holidays should be about happiness and togetherness, right?
1. Prioritise your sleep.
With all of the festivities and duties, it is tempting to neglect sleep. Late-night parties, early morning activities, and a seemingly never-ending to-do list can make you feel like a zombie. Remember that sleep is your hidden weapon. Aim for at least two or three nights per week where you get to bed on time. Even if you have trouble falling asleep, merely lying in bed and resting might boost your energy levels. Trust me: a well-rested you is a happier you. And no one wants to be the Grinch at the holiday party!
2. Celebrate the Joy of Giving.
The holidays are a time to give, and there is a certain joy that comes with it. Instead than viewing gift shopping and packaging as tasks, make them occasions for pleasure. Put on your favourite Christmas movie or music, drink some hot cocoa, and let the holiday mood fill the room while you wrap presents. It is not just the presents that are important, but also the thought and love that goes into them. Celebrate the joy of giving by focussing on the happiness it offers others—and yourself.
3. Grant yourself permission to let go.
This is possibly the most important tip of all. The holiday season is frequently associated with a self-imposed strain to make everything perfect. But here’s a little secret: it does not have to be. If you don’t feel like going to the party, you are welcome to avoid it. It’s fine if you don’t have every kind of stuffing on the table. And it’s completely acceptable to seek assistance when you need it. Accept your flaws and give yourself some quiet time in the midst of chaos. Remember that this is your holiday as well, and you must look after yourself.
The holiday season is a time to make memories, not strive for perfection. So, let go of the pressure and allow the moments happen spontaneously. Whether things go as planned or not, these are the moments that will be treasured recollections for years to come.
To summarise, while you navigate this hectic Christmas season, remember three things: prioritise sleep, embrace the joy of giving, and give yourself permission to let go. You do not have to do everything, and it does not need to be perfect. Take a deep breath, enjoy the simple things, and remember that you’ve got this.
Here’s to a happy, relaxing, and memorable holiday season. Have a wonderful day and I will see you tomorrow!
