Cans are infinitely recyclable – take that plastic! – which means that most new cans are made of old ones. Taking your cans to a recycling center might put a few extra pennies in your pocket. But why not re-purpose aluminum cans (or single-use plastics) instead? Environmental shepherds like yourself know the mantra “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” While we can’t help you with the reduction part until our growler fills are up, we’ve found some do-it-youself projects on how to reuse your beverage containers. After all, reusing canned drinks might be better than recycling.
Here is how to reuse empty soda cans :
- Protect your young plants – To protect your young garden plants from cutworms, place can with both ends removed into earth and plant. Plant inside can be sure to remove paper label.
- Make your big garden planters more portable – Rather than making your planter super heavy and filling it completely with soil. Stack the bottom 1/3 to a 1/3 with upside down cans and then pack soil on top. Now you can move around your planter anytime.
- Make office pen/pencil holders – Simply remove the top part, clean insides and wrap exterior with wallpaper.
- Incense stick holder – Make incisions 1/2 way up from bottom of soda can and fold outward. Place in bottom of larger empty food can. Place incense stick upright inside soda can opening.
- DIY Ashtray – Cut top of soda can (about 1 inch off) and cut vertically down length of can into 8 even strips. Fold strips outward like star burst and then fold strip into adjacent strip.
- DIY Lantern – By cutting slightly curving slits along length of can, you can make your own mini-lantern.
- Soda Tab Jewellery – Collect many soda tabs to make earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other accessories.
- Portable mini stove for Camping – You can make your own light weight and portable cooking stove out of 2 empty aluminium soda cans.
