You just got dumped, or maybe you broke up with someone. You just want to curl up and retreat from the world. It doesn’t matter if it was a long-term relationship, a short-lived cyber affair, an unrequited love or a good friends-with-benefits arrangement. If you cared and connected, you feel a deep and painful void where there was once laughter and affection. It’s like experiencing a small death. Grieving over your lost love for a short time is understandable, but if you linger too long in the purgatory of how-it-used-to-be, your friends will eventually get tired of hearing you talk about your ex and advise you to “Get over it.”
Getting over it. Easy to say. Much harder to do. Here are a few tips to get over someone :
- Cry a river if you must.
- Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings.
- Realise that you can’t do anything about it anymore.
- If you can’t forgive the person yet, at least forgive yourself.
- When you’re ready, give yourself permission to heal.
- Learn to accept that this person was important to you, but the past is past.
- Stop the blaming and let go of the anger.
- Get rid of the things that remind you of that person.
- Cut all possible communications with this person.
- Engage in physical exercise and outdoor activities.
- Clean up the mess – literally.
- Take baby steps, do things slowly, one day at a time.
- Be patient and never give up on yourself.
- Forget the past and focus on the present.
- Look forward to what the future may bring.
- Learn from this experience.
- Open your heart to possible new relationships.
- Find comfort in the company of your family and friends.
- Take time to love yourself.
- Seek professional help, visit a therapist or join a support group.
