Making Aromatherapy Moisturisers Part 2

Choosing your carrier product

When making your own aromatherapy beauty products, take the time to decide which case product will best suit your skin type.

  • Double Cream – This dairy product makes a fabulous natural alternative to cosmetic creams.
  • Yellow Beeswax – Beeswax provides a thicker, more viscous base for your essential oils. It also has many healing properties of its own. You should be aware that beeswax may not be suitable for some sufferers of eczema, however.
  • Carrier Oil – You can buy carrier oils from herbalist. You can choose the oil depending upon your skin type.
  • Natural Cosmetic Bases – You can buy these bases from many natural cosmetics retailers, health shops and herbalists. They are generally colourless and unscented, ready for you to add your chosen essential oils.
  • Commercial Cosmetics – You can even add a few drops of essential oils to any existing body lotion or moisturiser that you have. Dilute at a rate of 5 drops of oil per 50ml of lotion or cream.

A few drops of essential oils can also be added to enhance your regular shop bought products. You can make an aromatherapy hand cream to soothe the over used skin on this part of the body.

  2. In the past, I have added essential oil to unscented cream I had after learning I could do this when at a deaf club, we had a person talk about aromatherapy and the different oils.
It gave me a chance to smell other essential oils to, to see what I liked.

    1. That is great Liz. With hundreds of oils to choose from, essential oils can treat everything from acne scars to wrinkles, with aromatherapy benefits that create a sense of calm. Mix a few drops in your moisturizer, or dilute it in a carrier oil, but make sure you understand the usage before coating your face with these potent products.

      1. The face is somewhere I don’t use. But my arms and legs I don’t mind.

  5. I love essential oils, I add them to various oils and use as a face serum. My favorites for the face are lavender, frankincense, and clove. What are your preferences?

    1. In order to be a really effective moisturizer, you need to have both the occlusive to lock in the moisture and the humectant to draw in that water. … So while oils can condition the skin, they only retain water content not add it, which means they are moisturizing but not hydrating.

      1. Would hyaluronic acid do the trick?

      2. Hyaluronic acid can draw moisture from air and keep your skin moist, holding almost 1000 times its own weight in water. So, it is not only a moisturizer, it has the ability to hold extra moisture. You can even take hyaluronic acid as a supplement, but we recommend consulting a doctor before you do so.
