How To Use Magic

Welcome fellow souls to « The Human Family Crash Course Series, » a new project collaborated together by empress2inspire.blog and dios-raw.com. Together we will be working on a different topic for each crash course; our seventh topic is focused on «Magic». Each topic will have ten posts with posts on Mondays and Thursdays. We hope you enjoy our series and we look forward to knowing how our posts have inspired you!

Magic is primarily a technology, a primeval tool that humans stumbled upon eons ago for accessing an invisible realm that they sensed held the treasure to their well-being. Magic gave people an avenue to attain what their hearts desired: protection, divination, healing, luck, vengeance and, most of all, a sense of empowerment. It’s a measure of comfort in a cold, dark word to have magic to play with.

The world’s magical practices are diverse, appearing at first to be a kaleidoscopic array of random symbols and concepts. However if we dig a little deeper, we find common constitutive elements. Language has power in the social world, people use words to hurt, conceal, soothe, and dominate, to evoke emotions in others. More than that, in certain contexts and conditions, the right words effect real change. This specialized linguistic form is one common ingredient of magic, where the power is given to the words themselves.

The concept of a flowing universal life force has been voyaging around the world. It has been referred to as qi in traditional Chinese medicine, prana in Hindu philosophy, and ka in ancient Egyptian religion. These names describe the essence of existence, a powerful current or energy that animates all natural things.

As with all divination and magical practices, spellwork is based on the belief that within each individual is an entire cosmology that mirrors the expanse of the universe; the microcosm of the macrocosm. Fundamentally, spell-making is the art of identifying, raising, and directing your energy. While most practitioners enjoy using ingredients and tools in their spells, the only required tool is your magical intention. Spell-making is the art of identifying, raising, and directing your energy with intention.

How To Use Magic

Though it can be intimidating or confusing at first to create your first spell, it’s okay to begin your practice because the only required ingredient is magical intention, any object can become energetically charged. Practice, practice, practice until you feel confident to develop your magical abilities, inherent us all. Simply put, you do not need to purchase expensive “healing crystals” to perform effective incantations. Sugar, cinnamon, black pepper, and cayenne pepper are powerful spices that can be used in a variety of oils, potions, and infusions. Your cooking pots can become cauldrons, and almost any candle can be transformed into a magical device.

Once you repurpose an object and cast it enchanted, it will always be magical. For example, a wine glass cannot be used both for creating potions and entertaining guests, unless entertaining guests is a component of your spell. Tools maintain energy, so always be sure to keep track of your mystical devices.

When choosing a place to perform your incantation, note that physical thresholds serve as cosmic entrances. Doorways, window sills, and cracks in the floorboards can become magical portals, symbolizing the space overlapping worlds. These are excellent places to practice or direct your spells. Similarly, casting your incantation at the intersection of day and night (dawn or dusk), as well as during seasonal equinoxes, can strengthen its potency. No matter where you choose to craft your magic, be sure to always close any door you open by signaling the spell’s completion (this can be through a formal ritual or simply by saying, “goodbye”).

A universal rule of white magic is that you should never cast a spell out of dark energy or with the intention to cause harm to yourself or others. The law of threefold return is the karmic principle of magic: Whatever energy you direct out will be returned to you with three times more power. Your magical intentions reveal your spirit, so always fuel your curiosities with love and kindness. Spell-making is empowering, mystifying, and fun ~ enjoy cosmic warriors.

“I do believe in an everyday sort of magic — the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we’re alone.” ~ Charles de Lint

The past few years have seen a resurgence of interest in the scientific study of magic. Despite being only a few years old, this “new wave” has already resulted in a host of interesting studies, often using methods that are both powerful and original. These developments have largely borne out our earlier hopes (Kuhn et al., 2008) that new opportunities were available for scientific studies based on the use of magic. And it would seem that much more can still be done along these lines.
