You Don’t Need a Reason to Go to Therapy

This is your regular reminder that there are hundreds of different reasons to go to therapy, and these reasons may or may not include having or suspecting a mental health disorder or a crisis. Therapy is a neutral tool, and you can’t make any assumptions about someone’s mental health status based on the fact that they go to therapy. And, at the same time, if you thin that therapy sound helpful, you can go! You don’t have to suspect a mental health disorder or have a “big reason”.

  • In therapy, you can express yourself freely and learn how to talk about uncomfortable things.
  • Your therapist can give you support and encouragement.
  • You can go to therapy for a mental health checkup to prevent future crisis.
  • Therapy can teach you new, more useful coping skills.
  • Therapy can help you learn more about yourself and your patterns and behaviours.
  • Your therapist can give you an outsider perspective on the things you’re dealing with.
  • Your therapist can help you navigate life transitions and changes.

I can understand, Gary. I have anxiety too, it’s soul crushing, sometimes it feels like my insides are being sucked away. But we shall prevail, Gary. We have been blogging buddies for many many years now. I am sending you strength and feel good hugs 🫂 🙏🏼
        Please feel better soon

Great post! I really appreciated your mention of not making an assumption about someone’s mental health status just because they go to therapy. Thank you for that. Hope you have a great day.

The problem with making assumptions is that we believe they are the truth. We could swear they are real. We make assumptions about what others are doing or thinking — we take it personally — then we blame them and react by sending emotional poison with our word.

  5. Therapy can be so helpful in many dimensions but you must be willing to do the work. Also, finding the right therapist for you is key.
