If you’re scared of something going wrong, trusting that you’d be able to cope with the worst case scenario can feel more freeing than trying to ignore the possibility of a negative outcome.
Instead of thinking about what could go wrong, think about what could go right is great advice and helps us focus on the fact that uncertainty can also lead to a positive outcome. However, sometimes when we try to focus on what could go right, our fear of things going wrong only intensifies. When you think about how awesome something would be, the thought of that not happening can actually start feeling more scary and more debilitating.
When we see a failure as insurmountable, it becomes much scarier and harder to ignore. When we believe that we won’t be able to survive something goes wrong, it can be very hard to detach ourselves from stressing out over that happening.
Instead of trying to ignore the possibility of a negative outcomes, it can be helpful to think about how you’d get through that and trust that you’ll be able to survive and cope, no matter what happens. When we know that a negative outcome won’t destroy us, getting excited about the positive side of things can feel a bit easier.
What do you think? How do you cope when you’re scared of something going wrong?
