Nine Lessons to Keep Your Pen Sharp and Your Coffee Strong
Starting the journey to become a writer or editor—or chasing any passion, really—can feel like entering an uncharted universe. It’s exhilarating, daunting, and full of possibilities. I have been in your shoes, and in many respects, I am still walking with you. Over the last two years, I’ve had the opportunity to study from some of the greatest in the field. The insights I’ve learnt have been eye-opening, and today I’d want to offer nine key lessons that have shaped my path.

The typical advise is to find your niche and stay with it. Whether it’s sports, pop culture, or beauty, the mantra is frequently “stay in it and grow.” But let me tell you, that isn’t the only way to succeed. Writing about a wide range of topics not only broadens your horizons, but also helps you uncover what genuinely fuels your enthusiasm. This exploration may lead to the discovery of a subject you had no idea you enjoyed.
When I first started, I experimented with everything from technology to travel. Each new topic was a learning experience, and I gradually discovered my voice. Don’t be afraid to experiment. The world is full of stories waiting to be told, and you could be the right person to tell them.
2. Ask questions.
In any workplace, there will be times when you are given a task that makes you scratch your head. The temptation is to figure it out on your own, but here’s the truth: asking questions does not indicate weakness. It’s a path to advancement.
Your supervisor or colleagues will appreciate your willingness to learn instead of guessing. It demonstrates initiative and a willingness to do things well. So, drop the ego, embrace curiosity, and ask away. Every question is an opportunity to improve your skills.
3. Do your research.
Research is the foundation of good writing. Dive deep into your themes, even if you believe you already know everything there is to know. But remember that there’s always more to learn. The world is continuously changing, so staying educated is essential.
I’ve spent endless hours investigating topics like NFTs, believing I’d achieved the height of knowledge, only to discover fresh layers and views. This ongoing learning ensures that your work remains fresh and relevant.
4. Put yourself out there.
Connections are essential in any field, and writing is no different. Surrounding yourself with others who share your interests can lead to opportunities you didn’t know existed. Attend workshops, participate in writing groups, and connect with others online. These relationships can lead to partnerships, mentorships, and friendships that benefit both your personal and professional lives.
Putting yourself out there can be daunting, but it’s worthwhile. The individuals you meet along the journey can motivate, challenge, and help you grow.
5. Be happy in whatever you do.
The notion that you must stay at a job for a year before moving on is obsolete. It is acceptable to leave your current position if it causes you stress and dissatisfaction. Life is too short to spend the majority of your time in situations that do not bring you joy.
Your happiness will be reflected in your work and affect every element of your life. Don’t be frightened to make changes if it means finding purpose. Whether it’s been two weeks or two months, prioritise your health.
6. Speak as you want the universe to hear you.
The words you say and think shape your world. If you persistently fixate on the negative, it will permeate into your life. Instead, concentrate on positivity and possibilities. Speak with intention and believe in your abilities.
Cutting ties with negativity might change your thinking and lead to new opportunities. Accept an optimistic mindset and see how it affects your path.
7. Challenge Yourself.
Routine can provide comfort, but it can also become a trap. If you’re locked in a loop of boredom, it’s time to change things up. Encourage yourself to try new things, take risks, and venture beyond of your comfort zone.
Growth occurs when you stretch your limits. Whether it’s trying out a new writing style or exploring a different genre, these challenges will keep you interested and open to what the world has to offer.
8. Be original in your words.
As authors, we have the ability to construct worlds via our words. Accept your distinctive voice and fill your work with personality. While it is crucial to keep the story’s tone consistent, don’t be hesitant to add your own flair.
Originality distinguishes you and makes your work distinctive. So, unleash your creativity and take command of your story.
9. Try again.
Rejection is part of the journey, but it does not mark the finish. If you don’t achieve your goals on the first try, don’t give up. Persistence is crucial. Whether it’s connecting with a dream firm or publishing your work, keep trying.
We are all human, and we are here to help one another. The writing community is full of people who understand the difficulty and want to help. So dust yourself up and try again.
The route to become a writer or editor is fraught with obstacles and successes. Embrace the road, learn from every experience, and never give up on your dreams. Remember that you are not alone—I am right there with you every step of the journey.
