Serrapeptase is a biological enzyme. Specifically, Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme. “Proteo” means protein, and “lytic” means the breakdown. Since its discovery in the 1960s, extensive research has been done into its benefits to human health. Research has found that it binds to proteins in blood which means it can be made available all over the body. It is now a popular supplement in Europe, the US and Japan.
Serrapeptase is the most bizarre enzyme, it is made by silk worms. As they emerge from their cocoon they release Serrapeptase to help dissolve its way out of the cocoon. Majority of Serrapeptase supplements are sourced from the bacteria Serratia Marcescans, it is then purified and made into powder ready for supplements.
Here are some health benefits of Serrapeptase :
- Due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties serrapeptase is often recommended to those suffering from carpel tunnel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, post-operative swelling, ulcerative colitis, and many other disorders.
- We recommend buying the enterically coated variety or taking these supplements on an empty stomach.
- One study researched the effect of Serrapeptase compared to the effect of one and bed rest post-operatively. They found that the serrapeptase patients has 50% less swelling in 5 days, than the ice and bed rest group. With the serrapeptase group the swelling had completely subsided by the day 10.
- Seeing as serrapeptase is proteolytic it is particularly effective against excessive mucus production. One study had participants with chronic ear, nose and throat disorders taking 30mg of supplementation, with this they found reduced mucus production and improved ease of swallowing when compared to a placebo.
