Start the day out with a cup of warm water and the juice of half a lemon. It’s so simple and the benefits are just too good to ignore.

Here are a few benefits of drinking lemon water :

  • Boosts Your Immune System – Lemons are high in Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting colds and potassium stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure.
  • Balances PH – Lemons are an incredibly alkaline food, believe it or not. Yes, they are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they are alkaline (the citric acid does not create acidity in the body once metabolised). As you wellness warriors know, an alkaline body is really the key to good health.
  • Helps with Weight Loss – Lemons are high in pectin fibre, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight after. And, my experience is that when I start the day off right, it’s easier to make the best choices for myself the rest of the day.
  • Aids Digestion – The warm water serve to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis – the waves of muscle contractions within the intestinal walls that keep things moving. Lemons and limes are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen Ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract.
  • Clears Skin – The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well.
  • Natural Diuretic – Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials because lemons increase the rate of urination in the body. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.
  • Hydrates the Lymph System – This cup of goodness helps start the day on a hydrated note, which helps prevent dehydration and adrenal fatigue. When your body is dehydrated, or deeply dehydrated (adrenal fatigue) it can’t perform all of it’s proper functions, which leads to toxic buildup, stress, constipation, and so on. Your adrenals happen to be two small glands that sit on top of your kidneys, and along with your adrenals that regulate water levels and the concentration of minerals, like sodium, in your body, helping you stay hydrated. Your adrenals are also responsible for regulating your stress response.

So, the bottom line is that you really don’t want to mess with a deep state of dehydration.

  2. good to know the benefits as I have been on a mission to drink more water. But water can be so bland and tasteless. Sometimes it’s better to spice it up with a little flavor!

    1. Here are some ways to jazz up water so you make a healthier drink choice that still tastes good, looks appealing and quenches your thirst.
      – Add slices of lemon, lime or orange. They add refreshing taste and make your glass look inviting.
      – Infuse water with fresh berries, pineapple or melon. Or freeze bits of fruit in ice cube trays for a more subtle flavor and an interesting look.
      – Slice cucumbers and add to water for a fresh, clean taste.
      – Enhance water with fresh mint leaves, basil, ginger, rosemary or cilantro.
      – Drink sparkling water or seltzer if you prefer some fizz. It’s still calorie-free but is thirst-quenching and provides a welcome change from flat water.

    1. Glad you liked the post. Lemon water is most effective if consumed first thing in the morning. It is recommended to add lemon juice to warm water because it helps extract vitamin C and polyphenols from the lemon and its peel. Also, how much lemon water you drink daily is important.

    1. Oh that is great. Nutritionist recommends using the juice from two to three lemons (about four to six tablespoons) throughout the day, and drinking one or two glasses of lemon water with meals, and one glass in between meals. But don’t necessarily add lemon to every glass of water you drink.

    1. A potential drawback is that the citric acid in lemon juice could erode the enamel on your teeth. To prevent damage make sure the water is lukewarm, not steaming hot. You can also drink through a straw so it bypasses your teeth, and rinse your mouth with water immediately after drinking. Wait 60 minutes after drinking to brush your teeth.

There are myriad benefits to drinking more water. Adding a cup of hot water and lemon to your morning routine will help you do that.

    1. With COVID-19, we know that the main reason for the extensive lung injury is the excessive free radicals and oxidative stress mounted by the dysfunctional immune system in an effort to kill the virus but end up harming the patient instead. Vitamin C, a water soluble powerful anti-oxidant, can neutralise these free radicals and reduce oxidative damage to the lungs. When the balance between oxidants and anti-oxidants is lost, that’s when the damage happens and patients progress to severe disease. By administering adequate Vitamin C, we can increase the anti-oxidant status of our body.

    1. Drinking lemon water in the morning on an empty stomach has been highly touted as one of the simple things you can add to your daily routine which can have a large impact on the health of your skin. This fruit is a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, beta-carotene, folate, calcium and potassium – just to name a few of the vitamins it contains. When you drink lemon water first thing in the morning, you’re feeding your skin an important dose of the vitamin folate. Found in all citrus fruits and juices, this vitamin (also known as folic acid) helps to eliminate toxins from your body which helps prevent acne and can even give your skin a natural glow
