Dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, and head lice are common causes of an itchy scalp. Regardless of the cause, various home remedies can help relieve an itchy scalp, or scalp pruritus. People can use essential oils, colloidal oatmeal, and over-the-counter (OTC) products to relieve the itch. People with persistent scalp itch that does not respond to natural remedies may benefit from medicated shampoos.

Here are some home remedies for itchy scalp :

  • Coconut Oil – The drier your scalp, the itchier is it. So, keep your scalp moisturised.
  • Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil moisturises and nourishes the scalp and eliminates the dryness.
  • Baking Soda – Baking soda is not only an antibacterial but also an anti fungal agent.
  • Olive Oil – Two major components found in olive oil, namely oleocanthal and oleuropein, have anti-inflammatory and skin protectant properties.
  • Lemon Juice – Lemon juice is a natural antimicrobial because of its acidity and phytochemical present in it.
  • Aloe Vera – Aloe vera gel is a natural moisturiser.
  • Peppermint Oil – Peppermint oil is used across the world for soothing itchy and inflamed skin.

    1. Haha glad you found them useful. You can also try Baking Soda. It also neutralises your scalp’s pH level. To get rid of itchiness in the scalp, you need to mix 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda in water and apply the paste on your scalp. Let it stay for 10-15 minutes and then rinse off.

    1. Glad you found them useful. Dandruff and an inflammatory skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis are the most common causes of itchy scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis can be the result of stress, seasonal changes, fluctuating hormones, or an overgrowth of yeast on the skin.

  3. Many thanks. Since tea tree oil is poisonous to dogs, I didn’t know what else to try.

    1. Dogs can smell essential oils. However, not all essential oils are safe for your dog. Lavender is perhaps the most popular (and one of the safest) because of its calming properties. Peppermint oil is another good one that can stimulate circulation and deter pesky insects.

    1. While most people apply the gel to their skin, it’s also safe to eat when prepared right. Aloe vera gel has a clean, refreshing taste and can be added to a variety of recipes, including smoothies and salsas.
