Understanding The Magic of Air

Air is associated with ideas and communication, representing divine inspiration and messages from the gods. The ancients watched the movement of the stars in the heaven and understood that the air is a source of mystery and wisdom. Places such as Stonehenge were built to capture the magic of the skies, the stones changeling the energy of sunrise or moonrise into the circle to empower rituals. Many of today’s sciences and mathematics have their origins in humankind’s need to interpret the messages of the air.

Air For Inspiration – Inspired by birds, shamans use spirit flight in their healing rituals and ceremonies. Meditation and herbs are used to make the spirit leave the physical body and fly through the air to other worlds, seeking a cure for illness or a solution to a problem. Work with air to enhance your intellect and to receive flashes of inspiration and new ideas. Air can open your mind to new possibilities and allow your imagination to soar.

Air in Myth and Legend

Messengers – All cultures have tales of wise messengers descending from the air. These include angels, birds, winged dragons and even today’s science fiction aliens, all of whom have access to more advanced information and technology than the people they visit.

Witches – Witches are often pictures flying through the air on broomsticks, a symbol of their wisdom and magic.

Sky Gods – Many ancient foods were linked to the intellect and communicative powers of the air. These include the Roman Mercury, the Greek Hermes and the Egyptians Thoth. The gods of the sky were all guardians of arcane study, and were thought to pass these gifts to humans.

Which brings us seamlessly to the pro-science atheist and author Michael Shermer who modified Clarke’s law to:“Any sufficiently advanced extraterrestrial intelligence is indistinguishable from God.” So finally, the question devolves to: would it? To answer that, we need to fasttrack to the latest October issue of scientific American which carries an article by Shermer called Belief in Aliens May Be A Religious Impulse.In it he quotes the physicist Paul Davis as saying: “What I am more concerned with is the extent to which the modern search for aliens is, at rock-bottom, part of an ancient religious quest.” Or the historian George Basalla who made a similar remark in his 2006 book Civilized Life In The Universe: “The idea of the superiority of celestial beings is neither new nor scientific.It is a widespread and old belief in religious thought.” A brief sojourn into the annals of Indian religious mythology shows that this is not a totally invalid observation. Consider for instance the Mahabharata — the great war of the descendents of Bharata.The epic poem is probably based on historical facts, but over the course of many millennia,it has gradually attracted and incorporated within itself a huge variety of episodes, treatises of didactic intent and any number of other miscellaneous materials.

        One thing that certainly comes to mind is Krishna Being a celestial Being from far beyond our known cosmos and, as I believe you have hinted towards here, many depictions of the ancient battles from the times of Bhagavad-Gita are now (or have always been) seen as struggles or engagements between spiritual Beings not of this world. There has also been a lot said about the Sumerians and their Godly relationship to the planets. I find it fascinating, not only that there appears to be much truth in what we know if the historical information, but also that so many knowledgeable people are willing to deny the existence of extraterrestrial influence on our existence past, present or future.

        The Fermi paradox, named after Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial civilizations and various high estimates for their probability (such as some optimistic estimates for the Drake equation).

        It looks like it is. New observations show that 2I/Borisov looks like a comet, just what astronomers expected. The second mysterious interstellar object found zipping through the solar system, 2I/Borisov, looks like a run-of-the-mill comet. That stands in stark contrast to the first known interstellar object, ‘Oumuamua (illustrated).
