Before Vitamin A and its health benefits were discovered Ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates was using liver, a rich Vitamin A source to treat symptoms that we would now diagnose as Vitamin A deficiency.
Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin much like Vitamins D, E and K. The retinol form of Vitamin A was discovered in 1912 by McCollum and Davis, and the carotenoid form much later, in 1957 by Thomas Moore. There are over 600 kinds of carotenoids, some well known compounds, include Lutein, Lycopene, Astaxanthine, Zeaxanthine and Beta-carotene.
