How does hypnosis work? Let’s learn more about the science behind trance and why it’s so effective at breaking life long negative habits and issues.

Did you know that hypnosis is just a form of focused relaxation that allows access to the unconscious mind?

Hypnosis guides your attention away from the everyday world so you can concentrate on a goal, such as overcoming fear or quitting smoking. What you experience when you’re hypnotised is called an alternate state of consciousness. So you’re awake but you’re not paying attention to the consciousness world in the same way. Instead, your thoughts are focused inward and you go into a mild trance.

The word “hypnosis” comes from the Greek word Hypnos, which means sleep. This is because it appeared that subjects who were hypnotised were asleep. However, when you practice hypnosis, you must be awake for it to be effective.

What is Trance?

A trance is the term for the state you enter when you undergo hypnosis. It might sound mysterious or like a frightening form of mind control, but it’s neither of those.

Trance is a natural state. You’ve most likely already experienced trance. It can occur when you’re doing something routine and your mind wanders, like staring out the window on a rainy day. In fact, whenever your mind drifts or waders, you’re experiencing a light trance. Some people call it daydreaming. When you’re hypnotised, this trance state if induced on purpose.

It’s simply another state of consciousness, somewhere between being awake and being asleep.

Come back tomorrow to learn more about what happens during hypnosis.

    1. Actually, we all go into varying states of hypnosis many times each day. When driving, when watching TV, when reading—you may even be in a state of mild hypnosis right now. Hypnotized people are like zombies or robots. Actually, you can’t make someone under hypnosis do anything they don’t already want to do.

    1. Trying to define consciousness takes us into the world of neuroscience, the science of the brain, and while some excellent research has been conducted, a consistent definition of consciousness has proved elusive. As consciousness researcher Joel Frohlich put it, “Consciousness is a mystery.” Put simply, when we wake up from sleep, we regain consciousness.

According to Lexico.com, the definition of consciousness is “the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings.” So let’s wake up and become aware of what is going on and the difference we want to make in the world. Whether you are trying to save the planet or become a better leader, consciousness requires awareness and an awakening. But waking up is not enough. It is time to consciously focus on raising your consciousness.

  3. GS, thanks for sharing! I did not know “that hypnosis is just a form of focused relaxation that allows access to the unconscious mind.” My mind is always running and I don’t sleep very well but certain people and/or topics make me drift away. To where… I don’t know; but, it allows me to escape mentally. I’m intrigued and want to learn more.

    1. Hypnosis is a purely natural state that allows direct access to the subconscious mind, where our learned behaviour pattern-making systems reside. Thus hypnosis is an artificially enhanced state of suggestibility, resembling sleep. Nevertheless, it is not sleep.
