5 Ways You’re Making Yourself Dumber 

If your IQ score isn’t the be-all and end-all of brainpower, and your daily activities and attitude can influence how intelligent you are, you can lower your cognitive powers just as easily as you can increase them. Simply put, you can make yourself dumber just as easily as you can make yourself smarter. You, of course, do not want to do that. Fortunately, here is a handy list of research-backed ways smart people lower their intelligence that you can avoid. They are as follows:

  • Multitasking -Neuroscience research tells us that the brain doesn’t really do tasks simultaneously as we thought or hoped it might. In fact, we just SWITCH TASKS quickly. There is a cost to this task shifting. it’s mentally draining to switch gears. Not only does it take more time, your work is of worse quality. According to study, task shifting can actually cost up to 40% of a person’s productive time. It’s time to put a halt to multi-tasking. Focus on one task at a time.
  • Checking your phone as soon as your wake up – It may to be the best way to start your day considering the fact that you’re being bombarded with new messages, emails, to-dos and other things that trigger a feeling of stress and anxiety. This disrupts your chances of starting your day with a calm mind, affect your brain’s ability to prioritise tasks and make you less productive. Instead of starting your morning on the scroll, begin your day with some healthier habits such as meditating, drinking a glass of warm water, exercising etc.
  • Not having a bedtime routine – Your bedtime routine should represent a calming period that helps you wind down in preparation for sleep. More often than not, a poor bedtime routine equals poor sleep. Plenty of seemingly harmless bedtime habits can lead to a poor night’s sleep, which can lead to irritability, trouble concentrating, poor performance at a work, and is not great for your long term health. If you find yourself struggling during the day, you might want to examine your bedtime habits.
  • Not turning off notifications – You are not obligated to be bombarded with interruptions from your social media platforms or messages that your favourite online podcasts has just uploaded a new topic. As soon as you turn on notifications, you’ve wilfully given up control of your focus by inviting outside distractions to disrupt your workflow.
  • Drinking coffee more than water – It is often said that caffeinated drinks would dry you out. However, no evidence for this has yet been found. But that does not mean that drinking coffee all day long is good for you. High coffee consumption can cause other health problems, such as : stomach upset, heartburn, restlessness, increased anxiety or nervousness, insomnia and an increased heart rate. In that sense, it is certainly desirable to limit your coffee and tea consumption and to supplement your water intake with water.
