Tips to Boost the Love Hormone

Many of us may know oxytocin as the hormone that’s released after sex that makes you want to cuddle up with your partner, but there are other activities that can encourage oxytocin release as well. There are a number of unexpected ways to increase oxytocin in the morning that don’t involve sex, and they can have you feeling just as good. Although the hormone can be useful any time of day, it’s nice to start off your morning with feelings of calmness, contentment, and empathy for those around you.

Here are tips to boost the love hormone :

  • Make Eye Contact – When you smile warmly and look into one another’s eyes oxytocin can encourage a sense of trust.
  • Hug – While in each other’s embrace sharing a hug, oxytocin can make you want to stay and cuddle.
  • Hold Hands – Touch can decrease the stress hormone cortisol, lower blood pressure, and release oxytocin.
  • Kiss – A smooch may start out with a rush of dopamine and desire, but can lead to a sweet surge of oxytocin.
  • Play Music and Dance – Music and dancing can enhance your mood and may release oxytocin.

When couples play board games together or take a painting class with each other, their bodies release oxytocin — sometimes dubbed the “hugging hormone.” But men wielding paintbrushes released twice as much or more as the level of women painters and couples playing games, a Baylor University study has found.

Most welcome. When you hug or kiss a loved one, your pituitary gland releases oxytocin. This is especially important for pair bonding, like in romantic relationships, as it elevates your mood and makes you feel more “attached” to your romantic partner.

Any moment with your partner provides an opportunity to turn towards them, or away from them. Your partner will make attempts to get your attention, affirmation, or affection. Showing interest, being affectionate, or paying attention to what they say are all examples of turning towards your partner for connection.
Don’t beat yourself up if you have moments of turning away. We can’t always turn towards 100% of the time and one moment of turning away is not important. A pattern of turning away is what might signal an issue in the relationship.
