Benefits of Cherries Part 1

Fresh cherries are a favorite summertime treat, whether you love them in a fresh-baked cherry pie or as an energizing snack. Cherries are also incredibly good for you—and they boast a wide range of benefits far beyond just being delicious. Power-packed cherries are full of antioxidants, fiber, calcium, and vitamin C to help protect against chronic diseases, boost your recovery after exercise, and so much more.

Below, find out exactly why this ruby red fruit is worth adding to your diet.

  • Promote Weight Loss – By consuming tart cherry juice, or a cherry supplement, you reduce inflammation and lipids in the blood, which lead to heart conditions and weight gain.
  • Boost Heart Health – Research done at the University of Michigan suggests that tart cherries provide cardiovascular benefits and can reduce the risk of stroke, without the serious side efforts that come with prescribed medications.
  • High Source of Antioxidants – Anthocyanin and cyanidin are two components of cherries that provide powerful antioxidants, making cherries a high antioxidants food; in fact, a study published in the Journal of Natural Products found that the anthocyanin and cyanidin isolated from tart cherries exhibited Bette anti-inflammatory activity than aspirin. Cherries also serve as a natural treatment for macular degeneration and glaucoma because of their powerful antioxidants that help prevent eye damage.
  • Treat Gout – A study published in Arthritis & Rheumatism evaluated 633 individuals with gout who were treated with cherry extract over a two day period. This cherry treatment was associated with a 35 percent lower risk of gout attacks. When cherry intake was combined with allopurinol use, a prescribed medication for gout and kidney stones, the risk of gout attacks was 75 percent lower.

Sweet cherries, including the popular Bing and Rainier varieties, are available from May to August. Sour, or tart cherries have a much shorter growing season, and can be found for a week or two, usually during the middle of June in warmer areas and as late as July and August in colder regions.

Cherries are also a good source of the nutrient potassium, with approximately 260 milligrams in a one-cup serving. Potassium is a main electrolyte that keeps the body functioning properly, and plays an important role in muscle, heart, kidney and nerve cell functions.
