Withania somnifera (Ashawagandha) is very revered herb of the Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine as a Rasayana (tonic). It is used for various kinds of disease processes and specially as a nervine tonic. It is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for medicinal purposes over 2,500 years. It is popular in Ayurvedic medicine because of its many healing qualities.

The root of Ashwagandha is regarded as tonic, aphrodisiac, narcotic, diuretic, anthelmintic, astringent, thermogenic and stimulant. Here are some of the main uses :

  • It helps boost muscle strength and mass.
  • It reduces joint pain.
  • It increases endurance and stamina.
  • It boosts immunity.

  1. If you are a sufferer of stomach ailments such as acid reflux or a sufferer of anxiety it can be a problem. It contains alkaloids such as nicotine that if drunk make you feel quite queasy on a sensitive stomach. Tried it! Can confirm

  2. I’ve noticed in the past that your posts are very well timed for me. I’ve been in a cycle of anxiety for the past three years. And you know, anxiety perpetuates anxiety! I read about ashwagandha less than a month ago, bought some, and within weeks am already finding improvements. I’ve been reluctant to promote it, not knowing if it’s working or all in my mind. It eases away stress and gives me energy. It sharpens thinking without Subduing emotions.

  3. I have used it for well over a year. it has not improved depression, thyroid problems, for which I started using it, or much of the list. Why is that?
