True Freedom comes when we accept ourselves for who we are!

It is impossible without a mind made free by discipline. It is the mind which sees things and then fills us with new desires. Desires are good, but not all. What about those desires which originate out of ego, jealously, anger? The worst part is that there is not getting away from these desires, they will comes and go till we are alive. Even at our death beds, we will have a desire to stay alive for some more time.

“Freedom (n.): To ask nothing. To expect nothing. To depend on nothing.” Ayn Rand

It’s easy to fool yourself into thinking that you act independently. But becoming a more free and independent person is a complicated issue, and there are many road blocks that will get in your way. One of the most common is “To Be Socially Accepted”.

In public, it is very common to behave in a way that you never would alone. That is because you feel the need to adhere to a particular role in that context. Consider the person who feels obligated to drive a nice car as a status symbol. Their identification with their job creates a role that they “needs” to play, and then imposes a severe restraint or condition upon them. Same goes for traditions and cultures as well. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that traditions are always bad. But they can have unintended side effects regarding your ability to make decisions and act on them independently.

So..now what?

Remove your social mask. Essentially, this means that you should act more authentically and more true to yourself when around others. It’s so easy to slip into a persona in public and pretend to be someone you’re not. In fact, if you’ve done this enough, it can be almost impossible to take off your social mask, but you must try. Train your mind to identify with your real self, remind yourself of who you really are. Write down things which really matter to you and then read it – re-read it again and again till it becomes your second skin.

Does it help in getting your personal freedom back? You tell me in the comments section.

  1. For me, I’ve found freedom in the practice of self-realization. Introspection if you will. The further I go, the more of I, I become.

    1. Hi, yes looking within your soul is a great way of being in touch with your truth. For many years I allowed myself to live in a prison. I lived in a psychological prison. When you live in this type of prison you live your life ruled by the never ending chatter going on in your conscience. Your thoughts start to speak so loudly that you lose sight of what liberty is all about. You find yourself living in confusion and living constricted. However, one day it occurred to me that freedom was a decision. I learned that the power was not in the circumstances that were occurring in my life. The power was in my ability to make a different choice. Choice is always the catalyst to change in your life. What choice do you need to make that can change the trajectory of your life forever? Decisions are always the portal to a different path

      1. Yes indeed, well put. Choice is the determinate for ones life and – if utilized – can pull one from the gutter to the mansion(both physically and metaphorically).

  2. Just when you think you have been living and being your authentic self, something longtime stable changes and like dominoes, I find myself starting all over. Being authentic is always something to strive for, but sometimes part of it is making adjustments to live authentically. Your post is very thought provoking.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Terre, Glad you liked my post. If you ask any person on the street what they think is meant by ‘personal freedom’ you will probably get varied responses; from smoking in public places to physical freedom. However, within the area of human rights law the concept of personal freedom is more serious. It is a sad fact that there are some members of our society that believe that their personal freedom includes helping themselves to everyone else’s possessions and property or behaving in a violent manner, just because their human rights are protected does not mean that they can carry on in this way.

  3. Sometimes my social mask is there for the safety of others. I don’t mind wearing that one. Keeps me out of jail and prevents me from causing all sorts of harm.

    1. Hi Ravi, Thank you, Glad you liked the post. Some of the things I believe now I would have thought to be insane or ludicrous a year ago. But through my willingness to relax what I believed and remain open, I’ve been able to live an extraordinary life. You can start simple and small by being grateful for your breath or that you have enough to eat. Over time, little by little, your life situation will shift. Expanding your sphere of gratitude helps you tap into the spiral effect: the better it gets, the better it gets.

  6. You cannot be your authentic self in front of “others”. The term “others” is too general. You can be your authentic self with friends, family, or people that genuinely care about you as an individual, and, consequently have some appreciation of your genuine self. Even then, you might choose to withhold certain aspects of your self that might arouse undue criticism or that would not be understood.

    1. Hi Robert, Yes Indeed. Fulfillment comes from living your truth. Doing your values. Pursuing your dreams. “To thine own self be true” said that British sage Shakespeare. No point in getting to the end and realizing you never let the real you come out to play. A great life grows from an authentic one. Keep shining.

    1. Hi, I will definitely check out your post right away, would love to read another take on personal freedom. Freedom .. How you make it? How to have more freedom in life? You make it by taking full responsibility for your life. Be tired and have fun at the same time. You can only feel freer when you can fully accept that your happiness is your responsibility. And that goes deeper than you think at first.
      Thanks Again. Best to you!

  8. Hi Empress,

It is a good reminder to not be a people-pleaser. Be yourself first. If does take a lot of pressure of yourself to not be someone you are not.

    Thank you,

    1. Absolutely Gary, reminds me of a famous quote. “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.” – Bruce Lee
