True Freedom comes when we accept ourselves for who we are!
It is impossible without a mind made free by discipline. It is the mind which sees things and then fills us with new desires. Desires are good, but not all. What about those desires which originate out of ego, jealously, anger? The worst part is that there is not getting away from these desires, they will comes and go till we are alive. Even at our death beds, we will have a desire to stay alive for some more time.
“Freedom (n.): To ask nothing. To expect nothing. To depend on nothing.” Ayn Rand
It’s easy to fool yourself into thinking that you act independently. But becoming a more free and independent person is a complicated issue, and there are many road blocks that will get in your way. One of the most common is “To Be Socially Accepted”.
In public, it is very common to behave in a way that you never would alone. That is because you feel the need to adhere to a particular role in that context. Consider the person who feels obligated to drive a nice car as a status symbol. Their identification with their job creates a role that they “needs” to play, and then imposes a severe restraint or condition upon them. Same goes for traditions and cultures as well. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that traditions are always bad. But they can have unintended side effects regarding your ability to make decisions and act on them independently.
So..now what?
Remove your social mask. Essentially, this means that you should act more authentically and more true to yourself when around others. It’s so easy to slip into a persona in public and pretend to be someone you’re not. In fact, if you’ve done this enough, it can be almost impossible to take off your social mask, but you must try. Train your mind to identify with your real self, remind yourself of who you really are. Write down things which really matter to you and then read it – re-read it again and again till it becomes your second skin.
Does it help in getting your personal freedom back? You tell me in the comments section.
