“To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.” ~ Oscar Wilde.

Do you know what it means to love yourself unconditionally? Do you know how to totally accept and embrace yourself fully? Are you facing difficulties with loving yourself?

Listen to your mind talk and you will know things. Chances are that you have been saying more negative than positive things to yourself. If your self-talk is unkind, causes you to feel down and erodes you of your spirit, then you can be said to be having some challenges with feeling good about yourself.  On the contrary, should you love yourself absolutely, you will be supportive, compassionate and not be constantly criticizing yourself. Hence, it is important that you start to observe what you have been saying to yourself.

Overflowing love comes from consciously choosing to learn with your personal source of spiritual guidance about loving yourself. When your intention is to learn about loving yourself – rather than being to get love and avoid pain – your heart opens to your true source of love.

Despite all the things that you think may be terribly wrong with you, love yourself. Love yourself. Tattoo it on your brain. I can think of so many reasons why you should love yourself, but here’s just one: It is incredibly dull and uninspiring to be around people who do not love themselves. Ugh. Yes, it is! It is so boring to hear someone crib about their dull lives all the time, it brings your energy down.

You are the only person who can truly love you. When we expect others to love us more deeply than we love ourselves, we set ourselves up to resent them when they don’t. Only you can have deep compassion for yourself, because you are the only being you have control over. What glorious freedom to realize I don’t have to worry about how much someone else loves me or feels compassion for me – it’s MY job!

    1. Hi North, thank you for the appreciation. It is easy to forget that, before anyone else, you come first. I know, for me, it was a hard concept to understand. I knew I came first; I have always looked out for my interests and well-being, but at the same time, I could not help but want to save or look after those closest to me. I call it the Aquarian humanitarian in me, while everyone else that I know categorizes it as naivety or selflessness. Even when my friends or family would make it clear that I was giving way too much of myself to people, it did not bother me. Reciprocity was not what I was looking for; I just wanted to show my loved ones and those around me that if no one else would love them fiercely, then I would.

  4. Such a wonderful post again!
Who will love yourself unconditionally if not you? I think that if we were to put down things we say to others and what we say to ourselves, we might just be surprised at how much more negative we are towards ourselves. We have to cherish, love and respect ourselves.

    1. Hi Kristina, well Said. Reminds of a quote : Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” – Lucille Ball.
Depending on other people for approval is a risky strategy. Sure, when others gift us with love and approval it can seem easy to power through all of life’s challenges. However, if and when this approval is withdrawn (as it may be for many reasons), your self-esteem and drive will evaporate unless you can fall back upon self-love. Set your own goals and prove to yourself that you can meet them without approval or input from outside sources.

  5. One of the hardest things to do … loving yourself at all, but especially FIRST! Great blog and well-timed in our hectic, confused world. I commend the ideals and feelings of the author.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, means a lot coming from another author. If you lead a busy life, putting everyone else’s needs before your own can become a regular habit. However, if you don’t tend to your basic needs (relaxation, exercise, time alone, a good diet, time for fun), you will end up resenting others around you. This robs you of the opportunity to not only love yourself, but to form healthy relationships with others. Work out what you need to be happy, and concentrate on meeting them on your own terms.

    2. To truly love yourself, you must understand who you truly are. Be sure to spend quality ‘alone time’ on a regular basis. Discover and honour your own interests and hobbies. This way, you will never lose yourself when in a relationship with someone else. Take pride in who you are.

  11. Love yourself is a good thing but there are boundaries. Cannot over do it. Also I think we can only truly love someone else if first we are able to love ourself.

    1. Yes Szee, personal boundaries are important. Personal boundaries are guidelines, rules or limits that a person creates to identify reasonable, safe and permissible ways for other people to behave towards them and how they will respond when someone passes those limits.

  12. I do love that quote from Oscar Wilde ~ “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.” and love it even more with the additional words of Brian Blessed “… and don’t let the bastards grind you down.” ❤

    1. Hahahaha nice one. This line “..and don’t let the bastards grind you down” Cracked me up. Thank you. Have a great week ahead!

      1. My week ahead: Dragging my sorry arse from the lazy place to tidying up something I have been avoiding, my few hours volunteering where I need to address something that bothers me, but will not bother the person I need to talk to this about, a first aid course (that I am part looking forward to and part wondering why I need to wear suitable clothes to crawl around in, picking up my sister from the train station (that’s a good thing) and going to a vegan “Lucky Pot” (also a good thing, but that I can suffer from social anxiety in groups and sometimes come across as inappropriate). So I will attempt to have a great week ahead, shoulders, legs etc within the romance of my life, not letting the perceptions of bastards grind me down. Namaste beloved.

    1. “To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

The most important decision of your life, the one that will affect every other decision you make, is the commitment to love and accept yourself. It directly affects the quality of your relationships, your work, your free time, your faith, and your future.
