Being kind is often dismissed as weakness. Of course it is; we live in a competitive environment that emphasises winning at any cost.

Nastiness is very common these days. It is a  form of self-protection: a person who feels weak and fears exposure will keep others at bay by treating them badly. From this perspective, people are only unpleasant when they’re unhappy with themselves, and take out their fears and frustrations on those around them. So when someone is nasty with you, don’t take it on yourself, its them NOT you.

Being Kind is the new kind of bravery, an everyday heroism to counter the general culture of cynicism. By being kind, we take the risk of being had. It requires courage. Anyone can take advantage of generosity, and there are plenty of people who believe that others are only kind to them when they want something, or because they’re afraid. So it’s important to remember that being kind does not mean being a doormat: you still have to assert yourself and stand up for what’s right.

Agreed on most points. But… What about when someone is actually following through with your last point and need to do so in such a way that kindness is trumped by tough love? At times, when others make it a pattern to show disrespect on several levels, they don’t need the namby-pamby approach to get the point. Letting someone continue to walk over you simply because you are kind in every response may actually be doing the other a dis-service, when what they need is a reality check. I’m not talking about vengeance, or retribution. Just tough love kindness. This too is a strength, since we know that what may be happening with someone in our relationship with them most likely is happening elsewhere in their relationships. Getting firm, while kind hearted, with such a one may actually protect them from someone else’s less honorable reactions.

    1. Thanks for this scenario. When this happens, practice loving kindness, remember it’s not you who is wrong, the rude person is. When a person is rude or shows tough love, it means he needs love at that time. But yes, if you think you are being trampled upon, take a step back, leave the conversation.

  4. Everyone needs to be constantly reminded of this message and to stop being afraid. When we choose to love, then kindness will follow. Treat yourself kindly and treat everyone you meet kindly.

  7. I agree that being nasty seems to be the normal way to behave for some people. My experience with showing acts of kindness has exposed me to painful experiences. Now I don’t know who to to kind to so I just keep quiet and smile. Happy Holiday.
