The breath is linked to our automatic nervous system. Daily breathing practices activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with resting and digesting i.e. a more peaceful mind and body.

Here are some health benefits of breathing :

  • Decrease anxiety & depression.
  • Increases happiness and optimism.
  • Improve sleep.
  • Strengthen our ability to regulate emotions.
  • Improve trauma symptoms.
  • Reduce impulsivity, cravings & addictions.
  • Decrease stress & regulates our body’s level of cortisol.
  • Strengthen our immunity by altering genes responsible for stronger immunity.
  • Reduce pain and activation of pain centers on the brain.

Kabat-Zinn makes clear the powerful connection between meditation and breathing when he writes, “The breath is the current connecting body and mind…It is the current of life.” Meditative breathing is a way to connect with the here and now, which is life.

    1. Glad you liked it. Controlled breathing exercises can help keep your mind and body in shape, by helping to lower blood pressure, promote feelings of calm and relaxation, and relieve stress.
While the long-term benefits of breathing exercises haven’t been studied at length (at least in a controlled clinical setting), many experts encourage using the breath as a means of increasing awareness, mindfulness, and putting yourself on the path to Zen.

    1. I will check them out. Thank you for sharing. Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body. This is because when you breathe deeply, it sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax. The brain then sends this message to your body. … Breathing exercises are a good way to relax, reduce tension, and relieve stress.
