A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that can occur after an impact to your head or after a whiplash-type injury that causes your head and brain to shake quickly back and forth.

Here are some signs of a concussion :

  • Irritability
  • Balance Issues
  • Loss of Coordination
  • Problems Walking
  • Seizures
  • Drained of blood or clear fluid from the ears or nose
  • Unequal pupil size
  • Abnormal eye movement
  • Lasting concentration
  • Slurred Speech

  • Brief loss of conciseness after the injury
  • An inability to wake up (coma)

Here are a few symptoms of a concussion :

  • Memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness or feeling sluggish
  • Dizziness
  • Double or blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Balance problems
  • Slowed reaction to stimuli

Here are some of the red flags or emergency symptoms that you should look out for :

  • See a doctor if you suspect you or someone else has a concussion.
  • If you think a person has a neck or back injury, do not move them. Call an ambulance.

How is a concussion diagnosed?

  • A doctor will ask questions about the injury and symptoms.
  • Your doctor may request MRI scan or CT scan.
  • Your doctor may perform an eye test to check for pupil size, eye movements and light sensitivities.

Treatment :

  • Depends on the severity of symptoms.
  • May need surgery or medical procedure if bleeding or swelling in the brain.
  • Over the counter pain relievers
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activities.

    1. There’s no specific cure for concussion. Rest and restricting activities allow the brain to recover. This means that one should temporarily reduce time spent on sports, video games, TV or too much socialising. Medication for headache pain or ondansetron or other anti-nausea medication can be used for symptoms.

  4. This article really is important – my husband fell in March and had a subdural hematoma – emergency surgery. Almost lost him – but thank God he is okay now.
