Om

The human body and the mind are like sensitive electronic equipment that can project and receive messages. It is like a radio that can receive signals from many stations. Have you experienced feeling good when you meet somebody who is warm and sunny? Have you also come across somebody who is so pessimistic and cynical that after a few minutes you wanted to go away from the person? This is due to transference of emotions.

A certain Brazilian man was meditating. Suddenly, he felt the desire to buy a gun. He asked himself, “Why do I want to buy a gun? I am a pacifist. Like Mahatma Gandhi, I believe in non violence.” Three days later, he found out that his neighbour got so angry after having a fight with somebody, so he wanted to buy a gun a shoot the other person. This Brazilian man accidentally picked up the violent emotions of his neighbour when he was meditating.

If you live in a city with a population of 10 million people, can you imagine 10 million people radiating and projecting all kinds of thoughts and emotions? Can you imagine if you are very sensitive and you happen to live in such a city? This is the reason why yogis stay up in the mountains because there is hardly anyone there.

When you meditate, do you notice that there are many thoughts that keep coming into your mind? Some of them are yours, but many others come from external sources. You are actually in an ocean of turbulent thoughts and emotions. How do you go beyond this? By tuning in to a higher station. Instead of picking up signals from lower stations, it is possible to pick up signals from higher stations.

How do you do this? By using the mantra OM or AUM. This mantra has a purifying effect and helps the consciousness shift to a higher level. The mantra OM or AUM is not only practiced by the Indians, the Tibetans, and the Chinese, but also by the Kabbalists.

In the Kabbalah and in the book Zohar, there are 72 names of God. One of the names is “Aleph Vav Mem” where Aleph stands for A, Vav for U and Men for M. In other words, AUM is one of the 72 names of God. It is indeed very interesting that AUM is used also by the Kabbalists.

When Christians want to describe God, they always start with the word “OM”. When they want to say that God is all-powerful, they say Gos is omnipotent, that God is everywhere, they say God is omnipresent; that God is all-knowing, they say God is omniscient. Notice that all of these start with Om.

The word Amen is a simplified version of the mantra AUM. It is also connected with creation, but is more of a conclusion. It is like a period at the end of a sentence. Judaism, Islam and Christian prayers end with Amen. The inner meaning of Amen is “In the name of God, so be it”.

By regularly chanting the mantra OM or AUM, it is possible to purify the incarnated soul, thereby resulting in union with the higher soul. One should also use OM to purify an object, or a certain place or area. If a person suffers from psychological pain or hurt, or some other problems, the regulate chanting of OM or Amen may help over a long period of time.

Let us do an experiment. Chant OM or Amen slowly 12 times and observe what happens. When you have finished, try feeling hatred or anger, to try criticising other people. You will notice it is not that easy.

    1. Om chanting purifies the environment around you. The vibrations of Om open up the sinuses to clear the airways. It has a calming effect on our nervous system. Meditation with Om chanting relaxes our mind and body, our blood pressure decreases and the heart beats with a regular rhyme which is good for our heart health.

  7. “Om” belongs to a class of mantra’s called “beeja mantra”. These are mantras in the form of sounds, usually depicting much more than the mere sounds they make. Om stands for shristi stiti and laya, the origin, the maintainence, and the destruction. Covering the whole spectrum of human iife. My son’s name is Om 🙂
