For years, I wanted to wake up early. It seems almost all successful people get going before sunrise, and I wanted to be one of them. But when my morning alarm would go off, all the good intentions in the world couldn’t pull me out of bed. With a little willpower though I was able to learn the art of getting up early.

Here are a few simple steps that you can try to wake up early (if you want to :P)

  • Get 7-8 hours of Quality Sleep – Sleep is not only the foundation of your health, if you’re not rested, waking up will be near to impossible.
  • Set Out Everything The Night Before – Set out workout clothes, write a to-do list, put your bag together.
  • Visualise The Morning You Want – Imagine waking up energized for the day and popping straight out of bed.
  • Optimize Your Alarms – Get a new alarm and put it across the room.
  • Smile First Thing – Fake it till you make it, baby!
  • Head Straight to the Bathroom – Develop the muscle memory so that the minute you turn off the alarm, you head straight to the bathroom instead of back to bed.
  • Drink a Glass of Water & Brush Teeth – This will wake up your body and get you going for the day.

After you wake up early, the challenge is to stay up. Maybe you’ll love to relax and sip your coffee. But for me, getting too comfortable is dangerous. Take Care.

    1. Thank you Janie. I am glad you liked them. One very significant benefit of waking up early is reduced stress level. Better sleep quality. Early risers often go to bed early. Bigger scores. Brighter world.

  2. It is easy for me to wake up early- always was. Even when during the school days. It may been a year since I graduated from college- but I still wake up early.

In terms of Alarms- I do not set it for those annoying alarms that beep at you (those drive me nuts). Mine is set for a song- a quiet song to slowly get you out of bed, and you do have to get up to turn it off because it keeps on playing.

    1. That’s a good way to get up with quite song or slowly out of bed. It takes time for the blood circulation to reach the lower limbs while changing position from lying down to getting up. Also try practicing gratitude. Be grateful to be alive and woke.

      2. It is simply the ability to see or sense images in your mind – images of the things you desire, the life you want to lead, the relationships you want in your life. Actually, it is very similar to daydreaming but with a crucial difference. Daydreaming is casual and random while visualisation is structured and directed.

  6. Like the way you write, brief and concise. Waking up early is one of my concern also, but I find “just stand up and drink water” and “planning my day the night before” are the good action to take 😀

  7. I had read to drink water before bed but they didn’t explain why. Then I realized it’s because you will wake up having to go to the bathroom and that will force you to get up. It’s been a game changer for me!

    1. You are most welcome. I am glad you liked it. But despite the deluge of such stories, waking up at an ungodly hour isn’t some sort of magic productivity hack that will solve your time-management problems. For some, it can even be counterproductive. The trick is finding a routine that fits your situation.

    1. Glad you liked it. One very significant benefit of waking up early is reduced stress level. When you rise early, it eliminates the need to rush in the morning. You can then start your day on an optimistic note and such positivity often stays with you throughout the day.

    1. Thank you. I am glad you liked it. One of the biggest benefits of waking up early is the ability to go to sleep early. If you wake up at 5 a.m. and you’re productive throughout the day, you’ll be more tired by the end of the night, making it easier to sleep. This creates a better sleep cycle. And sleep is important for your health.

      1. Yeah, I usually wake up at 5 in the morning as I’m a school teacher here and need to catch the bus early. However, on weekends I tend to oversleep and that has become a habit of late. Working to come out of it.

  20. These are excellent tips. I especially love the “smile first thing.” That’s my problem. Sometimes I dread waking up another day. There are some mornings that I dread (Mondays) more than others (Saturdays). So, I try to small and thank the Lord for giving me another day.

I also love your tip on visualizing your day before. Sometimes writing down your visualization in a journal can help, even if your day doesn’t go exactly as you wanted to. It just puts you in a better mood and in a better frame of mind for when you wake up.

    1. Hi Chanel, you are absolutely right is saying that visualisation works. Numerous studies have shown that mental practice (through visualization) can be as effective to improve skills as real practice. You can develop and reinforce real skills by visualizing yourself practicing them. … This explains why visualization is part of most world-class athletes’ training: because it works! Thank you for stopping by this post. Take Care.
