In an effort to discern the best candidate for a job, employers are placing more emphasis on personally during the hiring process. During interviews, employers are closely assessing your soft skills, or intangible qualities and personality traits that aren’t always apparent on paper, but will allow you to be a star employee and grow with the organisation.

Here are top 10 of the most in-demand soft skills :

  • Communication : The ability to articulately communicate (in writing or verbally) with colleagues and clients is considered one of the most highly valued skills by employers.
  • Teamwork : It is just as important to have the ability to work within a team setting as it is to work independently, so you’ll want to highlight your contributions to the success of a team.
  • Flexibility : The abilities to adapt to changing business trends and evolving technology are especially important in today’s market, and are critical to an organisation’s growth.
  • Accountability : Hiring managers are looking for employees who hold themselves for their work, and can build a feeling of trust among peers and supervisors.
  • Leadership : Although you might not be in a leadership position, leadership is an important quality that employers are seeking because most day-to-day tasks require a sense of autonomy.
  • Analytical Thinking : Adapting to a changing landscape working around challenges, and developing new strategies to overcome obstacles are key qualities to possess in the workplace.
  • Assertiveness : Confidence in your abilities and willingness to assert your opinion when necessary demonstrate that you hold yourself accountable for the quality of work you produce.
  • Creativity : Thinking “outside the box” and offering a unique point of view that examines all angles of a problem is important in order to generate new ideas that drive business forward.
  • Time Management : The ability to strategically plan how you manage your time and balance multiple tasks in order to effectively accomplish company goals is a major skill that companies look for.
  • Drive to Succeed : Employers are looking for new hires who will want to grow with the company, so the ability to demonstrate your initiative and an aptitude for learning is very important.

Soft skills are everyday interpersonal skills that job seekers need to succeed on the job. They include communicating clearly and appropriately, remembering work directions, working well with others, and knowing how to solve problems. These skills will help youth succeed in life no matter what they are doing. They are necessary for youth to succeed in education, job training, independent living, community participation, and, ultimately, in the workplace.

    1. Yes. Currently, in six out of 10 occupations, more than 30% of activities are technically automatable. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs study suggests that 5 million jobs will be lost before 2020 as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and other socio-economic factors replace the need for human workers. Soft skills are the only thing which can save our work and lives becoming robotic.

      1. In a way you’re correct. But, with the advent of technology, empathy might be automated too. Watch the movie “HER” If you haven’t. It holds true, even now. The context might differ, but the essence still remains intact.

    1. I agree with you Dario. Soft skills are the other nonacademic skills students acquire to help them succeed in life. They often include social emotional skills, critical thinking skills, and skills that facilitate positive interactions with others and the ability to overcome challenges. Problem-solving skills. Critical-thinking skills. All important.
