If you are wondering about why we need to express gratitude – you are not alone. Expressing gratitude is essential because we often take for granted all that life offers us, without being grateful.
In this fast forward modern life when people don’t have time for themselves – even their slightest of concern means a lot. If somebody is helpful and kind to us in thought or action, we need to express gratitude or return our thankful feelings.
Here are my reasons of why gratitude matters in life and how it can change your perception of life itself :
- It’s difficult to have a bad day. It’s really difficult to have a bad day when you start that day off writing how lucky you are. Whenever you feel grumpy, frustrated, upset, worries, overwhelmed, annoyed or just plain worn out, call it out for what it is and put it in perspective. Remember what you wrote.
- Stay on top of your emotions. You learn to realise that how you’re feeling during the day is just a natural human reaction to whatever is going on around you. Emotions come and go. Things you’re grateful for, and the feelings you have when you remember them, stick with you longer.
- Keeping perspective. Think back to your list and what you’ve written that day, or during the week, and focus on all the reasons that you have to be grateful. This will keep you going, perk you up, shift bad thoughts to good ones and generally lift your spirits. All because of the five minutes you’ve spent first thing that day making your little list.
- Others will benefit too. It’s not only you that benefits, but your family does too. You might be much calmer, more patient, happier, relaxed and generally a better person when you have done your five minute gratitude list. It’s worth you doing it for that reason alone.
- Helps you prioritise. A gratitude list also helps you remember what’s most important to you and therefore what and where you should focus your time and energy throughout the day. If you’re really grateful for something then you should make it a priority and spend time nurturing it.
- Identifying common themes and patterns. Often there are common themes or things that crop up regularly for which you’ve been grateful. Try to incorporate these regularly into your day because they’re clearly important to you. Be intentional.
