Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) describes a group of symptoms that include lower stomach pain that may go away after having a bowel movement. Symptoms also include bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea. It is estimated that about 20% of Americans have irritable bowel syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome cannot be diagnosed from an x-ray or a blood test. It is based on the symptoms the person reports to their doctor after other causes are ruled out.
Here are certain Do’s & Don’ts of IBS
Do’s:
- Eat more avocado, olives, coconut, fatty fish, chicken and turkey, kelp and seaweed.
- Eat lots of fibrous fruits and vegetables.
- Sleep 8 hours a day.
- Take time to have some fun.
- Do moderate exercise.
- Take digestive enzymes, manic acid, magnesium and probiotics.
- Seek counsel whenever you experience any emotional trauma.
- Find the root cause your IBS
Don’ts
- Don’t be too stressed, avoid negative thinking.
- Don’t let yourself be surrounded by negative people.
- Don’t consume inflammatory foods (sugar, caffeine, etc).
- Don’t eat broccoli, beans and dairy products.
Keeping a food and symptom diary to help identify problematic foods. But changing your diet is typically not enough to curb symptoms. Managing stress and anxiety can also play an important role in alleviating symptoms, as can medications for more severe cases. Some patients may also benefit from physical therapy which can help tighten (or loosen) the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, areas that may contribute to IBS symptoms.
