Are you ready? When is the last time you went through you medicine cabinet to be sure you are properly prepared? You know as well as I do that sickness is coming. Yes, when you least expect it, when you least can afford it, and when you are least prepared for it, someone in your home will get sick.

Here is a list of medicine that you should keep at home at all times. Make sure that they are not used beyond the expiry date. This is a list of basic medicines that you can keep at home to alleviate mild symptoms, ease pain or congestion and treat allergies.

  • Paracetamol – This is an anti-inflammatory. It helps when suffering from fever, mild aches and pains. It should always be taken with food. Consult a doctor if the symptoms you’re experiencing won’t go away.
  • Antiseptic – Comes in lotion, liquid o cream form. It kills germs or bacteria from minor cuts and scrapes. Tetanus shots need to be updated to prevent serious infections. Tetanus shots are important when a metal, rust or a bite from an animal has broken the skin.
  • Antihistamines – Alleviates discomfort from allergies, hay fever or sinus. Some medicines can cause drowsiness which can cause difficulty driving or being at work so ask your doctor for different options.
  • Plasters & Bandages – These help to protect open wounds from infections and to hide cuts and scrapes. Also good for keeping ointment on the wound to keep it safe and clean. Just clean the wounds before applying.
  • Burn Kit – In case of emergency. Contains bandages lathered in ointment to protect and treat a serious burn wound while you seek emergency assistance. This can prevent to help scarring.
  • Antacids – These are used for heartburn and indigestion. They neutralize acid found in the stomach and help to alleviate discomfort. Consult with your doctor if discomfort continues. Antacids could cause or increase kidney problems if used excessively.
  • Cough Medicine – These help to open the chest and make sleeping easier. Always consult a doctor is a cough persists or is accompanied by a fever or you have difficulty breathing. A persistent cough could also indicate an asthma attack.
  • Decongestant – It is used to unblock noses to help you sleep better. You can also get medication for a nasal drip or to help dry up your sinuses if you need something stronger.
  • Rehydrate – It is used to restore lost water to the body when suffering from stomach bugs, flu or diarrhoea. Severe dehydration can lead to serious health problems.
  • Anti- Nausea Tablets – When experiencing nausea because of food, a tummy bug or illness. Pregnant women must never use any anti-nausea tablets without consulting a doctor. Visit your doctor if nausea and vomiting persists.
